ALL EMPLOYEES 0252 - Chicken Eggs Lifting Procedures 1. Plan the move before lifting; remove obstructions from your chosen pathway. 2. Test the weight of the load before lifting by pushing the load along its resting surface. 3. If the load is too heavy or bulky, get assistance from a co-worker. 4. If assistance is required to perform a lift, coordinate and communicate your movements with those of your co-worker. 5. Position your feet 6"-12" apart with one foot slightly in front of the other. 6. Face the load. 7. Bend at the knees, not at the back. 8. Keep your back straight. 9. Get a firm grip on the object with your hands and fingers. Use handles when present. 10. Never lift anything if your hands are greasy or wet. 11. Wear protective gloves when lifting branches with jagged edges. 12. Hold objects as close to your body as possible. 13. Perform lifting movements smoothly and gradually; do not jerk the load. 14. If you must change direction while lifting or carrying the load, pivot your feet and turn your entire body. Do not twist at the waist. 15. Set down objects in the same manner as you picked them up.

HATCHERY PERSONNEL - Hatchers, Sexers, Vaccinators

Hatching 1. Turn on the exhaust fans before removing chicks from the incubators. 2. Do not lift more than one crate of 100 baby chicks at a time. 3. Use the rolling pallets to move stacks of chick crates.

Sexing 1. Stand up and stretch once every hour. 2. If the chair height is too high, use a book or other object as a footrest. 3. For additional lower back support, place a pillow or bundled clothing in the chair at the small of your back. 4. Turn on the exhaust fan before beginning the sexing operation. 5. Wear a dust mask when performing sexing.

Clean-up/Sterilizing 1. Read and follow the safety instructions on the chemical container label and on the corresponding Safety Data Sheets before using, handling, or applying the chemicals in your workplace. 2. Wear boots and safety goggles when operating the pressure washer. 3. Do not point the pressure nozzle at anyone. 4. Do not use the pressure washer to wash off yourself.

FEED MILL OPERATORS 0252 - Chicken Eggs Unloading Railcars and Trucks 1. Use a spotter to coordinate the movements of the delivery truck when positioning it over the receiving pit. 2. Replace the floor cover after the feed truck has moved from over the receiving pit.

Cable Car Mover 1. Do not use the cable if it has cracks or frays. 2. Operate the cable at the slowest speed. 3. Two people are required to move any rail cars. 4. Engage the railcar brake after each move. 5. Do not attempt to unhook a taut cable.

Auger/Grain Elevator Operations 1. Replace all augers covers after making adjustments or repairs. 2. Do not stand or walk on the auger's cover. 3. Do not remove the auger cover while the auger is in operation. 4. Before starting the auger, visually look along its path. If anyone is working near the auger, do not start it. 5. Wear a hard hat when working on or near the grain elevator. 6. Keep your head low when walking under the silo supports.

Mill Operations 1. Wear a hard hat when working in the feed mill. 2. Lift only one bag of salt or nutrients at a time. 3. Use a pallet jack when you need to move several bags at one time. 4. Before servicing the hammer mill or the mixer, place the breaker box power switch to the "Off" position and place your lock in the switch's lockout hole and close your lock. Remove your lock and restart the machines after all of guards have been restored. 5. Use the handrails when walking on the catwalks to get to the silo tops. 6. Do not run while using the catwalks. 7. Keep your head low when walking under the mixer and scale hopper supports.

Loading Trucks 1. Wear a hard hat and a dust mask when working in the loading area. 2. Do not stand on the bulk truck's platform while the feed truck is repositioning from storage bin to storage bin. 3. Use your hands to turn the hopper flow gate control. 4. Do not run on the loading platforms. Do not jump from the platform onto the bulk truck or onto the ground. 5. Maintain a three point contact by keeping both feet and one hand or both hands and one foot on the ladder when climbing up and down ladders. 6. Keep you head clear of hanging hopper control chains and overhead supports while walking on the platforms. 0252 - Chicken Eggs HEN HOUSE PERSONNEL

Bird Removal 1. Wear protective gloves and a long sleeve shirt when removing dead chickens from the cages. 2. Use a wheel barrow or cart to carry dead chickens which have been removed from cages. 3. After loading the dead chickens into the disposal barrel, replace the cover on the barrel. 4. Use a hand truck to move full barrels of dead chickens. Do not lift a full barrel of chickens.

Hand Truck Safety 1. Tip the load slightly forward so that the tongue of the hand truck goes under the load. 2. Push the tongue of the hand truck all the way under the load to be moved. 3. When loading hand trucks, keep your feet clear of the wheels. 4. Push the load so that the weight will be carried by the axle and not the handles. The operator should only balance and push. 5. Place the load so that it will not slip, shift or fall. Use straps, if provided, to secure the load. 6. Do not try to catch the load if it is falling or slipping. Get out of the way. 7. Do not walk backward with the hand truck, unless you are going up stairs or ramps. 8. When going down an incline, keep the hand truck in front of you so that it can be controlled at all times. 9. Move hand trucks at a walking pace.

Feed/Egg Conveyors 1. Replace the pulley guards after oiling the pulleys and gears on the feed and egg belt conveyors. 2. Turn off the feed conveyor by placing the breaker switch in the "Off" position, and tagging the breaker switch "Out of Service" before attempting repairs or service work.

Backpack Blowers 1. Read and follow the manufacturer's routine and preventive maintenance schedule posted on the storage closet wall. 2. Only use grip locations as specified by the manufacturer as a handhold when operating the blower. 3. Before refueling, remove the blower from your harness, place the blower on the ground and allow the engine to cool. 4. Do not pour fuel into the tank of a running engine. 5. Allow the engine to cool before performing maintenance or refueling. 6. Do not smoke while servicing, using or refueling the blower. 7. Do not use the blower to clean yourself. 8. Do not direct the blower toward bystanders. 9. When cleaning chicken coop cooling fans, point the blower at the intake side of the fan. 10. Wear a dust mask and goggles when blowing down the chicken coops.

Bird Transfers 0252 - Chicken Eggs 1. Wear protective gloves when handling chicken cages. 2. Do not carry more than one chicken cage at a time. 3. Do not carry chicken cages up stairs, use the boom truck to elevate chickens to the upper levels of the chicken coop.

Cooling Fan Maintenance 1. Turn off the fan, place the breaker switch in the "off" position, and tag the breaker switch "Out of Service" before attempting repairs or service work. 2. Replace the fan blade guards after making belt adjustments or repairs.

Step Ladders 1. Do not use a ladder that wobbles or leans. 2. Do not use a ladder that has loose rungs, cracked or split side rails, missing rubber foot pads or other visible damage. 3. Keep ladder rungs clean and free of grease. Remove buildup of material such as dirt, feathers, droppings or mud. 4. Allow only one person on the ladder at a time. 5. Face the ladder when climbing up or down. 6. Maintain a three-point contact by keeping both hands and one foot or both feet and one hand on the ladder at all times when climbing up or down. 7. When performing work from a ladder, face the ladder and do not lean backward or sideways from the ladder. 8. Do not stand on the top two rungs of any ladder. 9. Do not carry items in your hands while climbing up or down a ladder.

Manure Removal 1. Only employer authorized employees may operate the bulldozer. 2. Wear hard hats, hearing protection, a dust mask, a raincoat and safety goggles while operating the bulldozer for manure removal. 3. Wear seat belts when provided on equipment with roll over protection. 4. No passengers are permitted on the bulldozer. 5. Do not use the bulldozer if its horn or backup alarm does not sound. 6. Place all hydraulic and transmission controls in the neutral position and sound horn before starting the bulldozer. 7. Do not stay in the cab of haulage vehicles while the manure is being loaded by the bulldozer. 8. When finished using the bulldozer, land the blade on the ground, set the brakes, turn off the power and shift the gear lever into neutral. 9. Turn off engine before refueling, oiling, or servicing haulage vehicles or the bulldozer. 10. Turn off the engine before leaving the bulldozer unattended.

EGG PRODUCTION PERSONNEL - Candler, Egg Packers, Machine Maintenance Candling/Egg Wash 1. Dispose of damaged eggs in the plastic disposal drum. 0252 - Chicken Eggs 2. Follow the safe handling and use instructions on the label and in the corresponding Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the egg wash chemicals used in your workplace.

Egg Sorting/Packing Machine 1. Turn off the egg packing machine by placing the breaker switch in the "Off" position, and tagging the breaker switch "Out of Service" before attempting repairs or service work. 2. Do not make adjustments to the egg packing machine while it is in operation. 3. After making repairs, reinstall all guards and automatic safety kill devices before starting the egg packing machines. 4. Immediately dispose plastic packaging wrap from egg cartons into the trash receptacle after removal from the cartons.

Egg Packing 1. Dispose damaged eggs into the plastic disposal drums. 2. Do not drag your hands along the sharp edges of the box as you are building it; wear protective gloves as you build the boxes. 3. Move boxed cases of eggs by pushing them rather than carrying them. If you must carry a case of eggs, only carry one case at a time. 4. Store case cutters, exacto knives or other tools with cutting edges in sheaths when they are not in use.

Housekeeping 1. Do not place material such as boxes or egg carton packaging trash in walkways and passageways. 2. Upon discovery of wet or soapy floors, take short steps when walking on them. 3. Mop up standing water upon discovery. 4. Use a hand truck to move the egg waste disposal drums. 5. Do not place material such as boxes or egg carton packaging trash in areas that block or obstruct exits or accesses to safety and emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers or fire alarms. 6. Read and follow the safety instructions on the chemical container label and on the corresponding Safety Data Sheets before using, handling, or applying the chemicals in your workplace. 7. Wear boots and safety goggles when operating the pressure washer. 8. Do not point the pressure nozzle at anyone. 9. Do not use the pressure washer to wash off yourself.

WAREHOUSE PERSONNEL General Warehouse Safety 1. Wear your lifting belt before lifting or moving merchandise by hand. 2. Do not attempt to catch falling materials. 3. Do not try to kick objects out your pathway; push or carry them out of the way. 4. Move slowly when approaching blind corners. 5. Do not jump from elevated places such as truck beds, platforms or ladders. 0252 - Chicken Eggs

Packing Merchandise 1. Move cases of eggs by pushing them along the conveyors rather than carrying them. 2. Store case cutters, exacto knives or other tools with cutting edges in sheaths when they are not in use. 3. Do not lift more than one case of eggs at a time when building pallets. 4. Do not build pallets higher than 6 cases.

Dock Rules 1. Do not jump from ramps, platforms or loading docks. 2. Use handrails when ascending or descending stairs or ramps. 3. Only approach a vehicle if the driver signals to you that it is clear to pass. 4. Keep clear of the dock edge while vehicles are backing up to the dock. 5. Do not begin loading or unloading until the supply truck has come to a complete stop, the engine has been turned off, the dock lock has been engaged and the wheels have been chocked.

Pallet Jacks 1. Do not exceed the manufacturer's load rated capacity. Read the lift capacity plate on the pallet jack if you are unsure. 2. Do not ride on pallet jacks. 3. Start and stop gradually to prevent the load from slipping. 4. Pull manual pallet jacks; push them when going down an incline or passing close to walls or obstacles. 5. If your view is obstructed, use a spotter to assist in guiding the load. 6. Stop the pallet jack if anyone gets in your way. 7. Do not place your feet under the pallet jack when it is moving. 8. Keep your feet and other body parts clear of the pallet before releasing the load.

DELIVERY DRIVERS Driving Safety 1. Shut all doors and fasten your seat belt before moving the vehicle. 2. Obey all traffic patterns and signs at all times. 3. Maintain a three point contact using both hands and one foot or both feet and one hand when climbing into and out of the delivery truck.

Dock Rules 1. Do not jump from ramps, platforms or loading docks. 2. Use handrails when ascending or descending stairs or ramps. 3. Only approach a vehicle if the driver signals to you that it is clear to pass. 4. Keep clear of the dock edge while vehicles are backing up to the dock.
