BERNICE SKINNER OF 12 COLUMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF HER NINETIETH 13 BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY 14 CELEBRATION AND MUCH HEALTH AND HAPPINESS IN 15 THE DAYS TO COME. 16 17 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are delighted 18 to learn that Mrs. Bernice Skinner of Columbia will celebrate her 19 ninetieth birthday on November 2, 2009; and 20 21 Whereas, Bernice Skinner was born on November 2, 1919, when 22 the twentieth century was still in its youth, and she has been 23 witness to nearly all the incredible changes and developments that 24 have come to this nation from that time into the twentyfirst 25 century; and 26 27 Whereas, after enjoying a life and career in the Boston area, where 28 she served for many years in public service and as a community 29 organizer and champion of causes, Mrs. Skinner relocated to 30 northeast Columbia in the late 1980s; and 31 32 Whereas, as a personable and warm human being, she could easily 33 be found on any given day in the yard of her new home in the 34 Springwood Lake community. This is where neighbors and 35 passersby would see this humanitarian, fondly known as “Mrs. 36 B.,” and come to know her; and 37 38 Whereas, drawing on a life of public service and a love for people, 39 Mrs. Skinner diligently set out to foster muchneeded changes in 40 her neighborhood and inspired others to do the same. Under her 41 leadership, the community acquired additional street lighting, new 42 roads, stop signs, traffic lights, cleanups, and enforcement of many
[786] 2 1 zoning ordinances. Among other worthy projects, she proposed to 2 public officials the idea of a senior activity center in her area, an 3 idea which is now a reality. For her extensive service to the 4 citizens of both Boston and Columbia, she has received numerous 5 awards; and 6 7 Whereas, upon her relocation to Columbia, Bernice Skinner did 8 not neglect the assembly of the saints, nor does she at the present 9 day, being a committed member of Little Zion Baptist Church of 10 Blythewood; and 11 12 Whereas, Mrs. Skinner and her husband, Troy Skinner, have five 13 children, who have given their parents the joy of thirtytwo 14 grandchildren, sixteen greatgrandchildren, and one 15 greatgreatgrandchild; and 16 17 Whereas, in recognition of her ninetieth birthday, her family will 18 honor Mrs. Skinner with a celebratory gathering on Saturday, 19 November 7, 2009; and 20 21 Whereas, the Senate is proud to honor this truly lovely lady at the 22 celebration of her ninetieth birthday and joins with her family and 23 friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary 24 milestone. Now, therefore, 25 26 Be it resolved by the Senate: 27 28 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 29 congratulate Mrs. Bernice Skinner of Columbia on the occasion of 30 her ninetieth birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration 31 and much health and happiness in the days to come. 32 33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 34 Mrs. Bernice Skinner. 35 XX 36
