Policy Statement

This policy addresses the safe management and effective use of computers within all aspects of Ellalong PS. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the following policies: - Department of Education Computers in Schools Policy - Department of Education Child Protection Policy - Ellalong PS School Discipline Policy - Ellalong PS Student Welfare Policy - Ellalong PS Staff Welfare Policy - Other Ellalong PS Key Learning Area’s Policies

Rationale

Children in today’s society require the knowledge and skills of computer technology in order to be able to adjust to their varied roles as future citizens of a highly technological society. One of the best ways of accomplishing this is by acquainting children with the potential role of the computer in society, by recognising the impact that these machines have had since their introduction and by providing facilities and opportunities for “hands on” experience that will give children a comfortable base from which familiarisation and adjustments can take place. The acquisition of computer skills is important. We have a duty to educate our children in the area of information technology so that we can provide children with the experiences needed to take advantage of educational and vocational technology opportunities.

Aims

The use of computers in Ellalong PS is designed to:

- Develop the necessary skills to enable the effective operation of a computer. - Assist students to develop the information and communication skills necessary to use computers effectively and appropriately. - Enhance student’s learning opportunities and outcomes in all Key Learning Area’s. - Provide students with immediate access to sources of educational materials from around the world. - Offer potential for effective group work and collaborative projects.

Access and Security

Students will: - Have equitable access to computers located throughout the school; in classrooms, the computer lab and the library. - Not adjust any settings for virus protection, spam filtering or internet access and history that have been applied according to Departmental standards - Ensure that all communication entered into via internet and email services is related to learning and is not abusive or inflammatory in any way. - Keep passwords confidential and have the I.T. coordinator change them periodically (each term) or when they are known by another user. - Never allow anyone else to use their user name or password to log onto the internet - Log off immediately after using a computer to ensure that nobody else can have access to their user name, password or account without them knowing. - Be made aware that all use of Internet and email services can be audited and traced back to the account the services were opened from. - Follow the NSW Department of Education notice to students and Ellalong PS Email and Internet Guidelines (see below)

The Principal and Computer Coordinator look at how you use your school email.

Access and Security (contd)

Ellalong PS will: - Take reasonable care to provide secure and safe internet access via the NSW Department of Education’s Internet and Email services. These services are centrally filtered and virus protected by the Department of Education and virus and spam protected at a school level. All protection is updated as soon as updates are made available. - Notify the Department of Education or a school delegate of any inappropriate material, virus or email detected, so that it will be immediately blocked from further access - Supervise students whenever they use a computer

Access and Security – Violations

The access and security of Ellalong PS computers will be considered violated by students if any of the following occur: - any settings for virus protection, spam filtering or internet access and history have been altered by anyone other than the computer coordinator and/or Principal - any abusive or inflammatory remarks are made by a student in any form - a student uses a user name or password that is not their own - a student knowingly enters an inappropriate website whilst using the internet - a student does not immediately report to a teacher when they have inadvertently entered an inappropriate website whilst using the internet

Access and Security – Consequences

In the event that a student / students violate the Ellalong PS Computer and Technology Education Policy, the following consequences can be considered (in accordance with the Student Welfare Policy): - the student/s DET portal account could be shut down for a period of time - The student/s password could be changed by the computer coordinator and the student/s access to the portal could be cancelled. - All other consequences for inappropriate use of the computers should be in accordance with the Ellalong PS Student Welfare Policy

Implementation

For students to fully utilise Ellalong PS’s computer technology it is envisioned that students will have direct access to computers in a number of settings including the classroom, computer lab and library where possible. Students should directly use computers in these settings for the following amount of time per week (these times are recommended).

- Early stage 1 - 2 hours per week - Stage 1 - 2 hours per week - Stage 2 - 3 hours per week - Stage 3 - 4 hours per week

It is up to teacher discretion how much of this time is dedicated to the specific learning of computers and how much is used in conjunction with other KLA’s. However it would be expected that around a quarter of this time would be dedicated to the specific learning of computers and computer technology.

Role of the Teacher

During any lesson that involves computers throughout the school it is the responsibility of teacher to: - supervise and monitor all students when using computers - recognise the diversity of students and groups of students, including issues such as prior access, level of engagement and attitudes to computer use - create a learning environment that is both supportive and challenging to students - provide well planned lessons that engage students in the learning process and provide opportunities for learning to take place - select and apply specific software so that tasks are age appropriate, clearly understood and possible to complete successfully - provide experiences for all students within a range of computer based activities - value prior knowledge and experience

Role of the Student

During any lesson that involves computers throughout the school it is the responsibility of each student to: - interact with others in a variety of situations - share computer resources and teaching time equitably - develop positive self esteem through successful interactions on the computers - develop new ways of learning - immediately inform the teacher if they suspect they have received a computer virus or spam or if they receive a message that is inappropriate or makes them feel uncomfortable - not intentionally download software, graphics or music without prior authorisation - read (or have read) and understand all appropriate policies relating to computer use and agree to meet these expectations - be made aware that any breaches of the Ellalong PS Computer and Technology Education Policy will result in a loss of access to the computers or other actions specified in the Ellalong PS Student Welfare policy. - report any other students who are not following this policy

Role of the Computer Coordinator The computer coordinator at Ellalong PS takes on a lot of responsibility. It is a role that is constantly developing and requires the coordinator to spend a considerable amount of time updating and maintaining both the hardware and software of all computers throughout the school. The Computer coordinator of Ellalong PS has the responsibility to: - be aware of any maintenance issues that arise throughout the school network and act appropriately - seek professional assistance when required, to maintain the school network - maintain and keep an up to date record of student usernames and passwords - create new log on and portal passwords for new staff / students - block and / or change student passwords when required and reverse this process when advised - in conjunction with the Principal, train and develop staff throughout the year in computer technology and the use of computers - report any inappropriate websites to the Principal and NSW Department of Education and Training via the I.T. Help Desk in order for those sites to be blocked

Copyright / Plagiarism Students and staff will at all times: - be aware of the legal implications of inappropriate internet access and copyright issues - acknowledge the author or source of any material accessed from the internet - not knowingly copy any material from the internet and claim it as their own - seek the approval of the Principal to publish materials from the internet

It is important for all staff to be aware that the Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) has a commercial agreement with the NSW Department of Education and Training that all published material may be used for educational purposes only.

Staff Internet Access and Computer Use Whenever staff use computers within Ellalong PS the following guidelines must be observed: - Use computers only for school related purposes - Use only your approved ‘@det.nsw.edu.au” email address when at school - Do not knowingly give a private email address to any students - Do not knowingly enter into conversation with a student on an internet chat forum at any time - Do not intentionally download unauthorised software, graphics, movies or music - Never publish false or defamatory information about a student, person or an organisation - Do not open or forward on any unsolicited advertising material (SPAM) - Be aware of internet email services; acceptable usage for schools policy issued by the Department of Education - Read and accept the guidelines outlined by the NSW Department of Education when logging onto your portal

Student Internet Usage Agreement

The Ellalong Public School Computer and Technology Education Policy specifies the appropriate use of computer technology within the school. Every student and staff member will have access to the policy. This document will ensure that every student and staff member is aware of the policy and the appropriate use of the computers and the internet at Ellalong Public School. The policy and Student Internet Student Agreement will be reviewed every 2 years.

Please read each requirement before signing the Student Internet Usage Agreement.

 I will not give out or send personal information such as names, addresses or telephone numbers of parents, teachers and/or students  I will never arrange to meet any person contacted on the internet at any time.  I will inform a teacher immediately if I come across any information that is rude, scary or unkind or that makes me feel uncomfortable.  I will only use the internet when I have permission from a teacher.  I will only use the internet for educational purposes  I will not download any materials without the permission of a teacher.  I will not download or print any inappropriate materials at any time.  I will comply with the copyright laws specified in the Computer Education Policy  I will keep my own passwords confidential and not deliberately attempt to find out other students’ passwords  I will not use my email account to harass, bully or send offensive and inappropriate emails.  I will not change or interfere with any of the settings on the computers.  I understand that if I disobey any of these guidelines I may lose my internet and/or computer access for a period of time determined by the I.T. Committee.
