Carol L. Cwiak North Dakota State University Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Emergency Management http://www.ndsu.edu/ndsu/em P.O. Box 5075 Fargo, ND 58105 (701) 231-5847 [email protected] Attached is the 2007 Body of Knowledge List as supplied by twenty-eight (28) practitioners at all government levels (22) and in the private sector (6). Many respondents replied with between three to five selections. Some selections were not readings at all, but instead skill sets, such as communication or leadership skills. A couple of respondents declared that anything by Drabek, Quarantelli, Mileti or Waugh was a “must read”, but listed no specific titles.
In total respondents offered 149 contributions which resulted in an 86 item list. 73% of the “must reads” provided were specific to one respondent (note: academia’s rate in 2006 was 85%).
A number of the practitioners noted difficulty in coming up with the list, while others just reported what they use in their day-to-day activities. One respondent who works at the state level wrote, “I simply turned around at my desk and looked at the books I use and then made a list of the top 10 books I use. I have been in the emergency management business for over 30 years. These references can give the reader a good knowledge of subject matters necessary to do an effective job in any professional emergency management career. The world has changed. We must consistently adapt to our surrounding hazards and vulnerabilities to reduce risk and increase preparedness.”
Of note are the similarities between this year’s Body of Knowledge list (practitioner version) and last year’s list (academic version). The lists in totality are quite similar and six of the top ten from each list are the same.
