Mullings Mull v. (1) to consider; to ponder. (2) to add spice as to wine or cider From: Rich Galen To: Usual Suspects Re: Wimoweh Date: Wednesday September 9, 1998 The White House has leaked the reason the President’s is meeting with Democratic Congressional leaders today is to tell them Clinton MIGHT accept a resolution of censure by the Congress but only if they do it before the November 3rd elections. I know they have been out of town for the past three weeks, but they haven’t been off the planet. See how far this has gone? A month ago if a Republican even mentioned the word “impeachment” the Democrats screamed, “Partisan, partisan!” Now, the House Democrats are complaining because they don’t think they’ve had enough meetings to discuss the impeachment process. Am I the only one who thinks David Kendall looks like Howdy Doody? An angry Howdy Doody? An angry Howdy Doody who has just caught Buffalo Bob with Princess Summerfallwinterspring? After Buffalo Bob had denied to the Peanut Gallery there was nothing going on, and sent Mr. Bluster out to defend him? For seven months? Today is the first day back for the Members of the House. The Senate came back last week. Look what happened. The first Democrat who takes to the floor to protect his or her political career by letting Clinton have it, will open flood gates which will make last week’s Senate activity look like a slow drip. Democrats left at the beginning of August claiming their constituents “never mentioned the Lewinsky matter” during meetings in their home districts. They return at the beginning of September having heard nothing else for the past three weeks. Republican Ed Goeas and Democrat Celinda Lake, well respected pollsters, do a bi-partisan poll called the “Battleground.” Their latest survey, released yesterday, indicates why Democratic support is flowing away from Clinton like the tide going out at the Bay of Fundy. The only number the President and his few remaining supporters have been able to point to has been his job approval rating. It has been, in some polls, as high as 71%. In this poll it has dropped to only 56%. That’s not why House Democrats are about to stampede like 15,000 Wildebeest across the African veldt. Here’s a portion of the Battleground analysis as written by the DEMOCRAT, Celinda Lake: “The current generic Congressional vote [we covered this definition in a previous class] reveals a divided electorate . . . 43 percent Republican, 40 percent Democrat.” A dramatic improvement for the GOP but that only makes the herd nervous. Here’s the lion springing out of the tall grass: “Peeling away layers of less probable voters to look at only the most likely voters paints a different picture – the Republican candidate enjoys a healthy eight point lead over the Democrat, 45 percent to 37 percent.” Run away! And all this is BEFORE the Starr report comes to Capitol Hill (and appears on the internet within minutes of its arrival). There is some disagreement among Democrats as to whether the most damaging information in the report will be: illegalities involving perjury and obstruction of justice; or additional details of kinky sex; or more Monicas. -- END --
