EMBASSY OF THE HELLENIC REBUBLIC ABU DHABI – U.A.E.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

As of 02 October 2012, visa applicant’s personal appearance will be required to submit their biometrics (fingerprints, digital photo) at the time of application. This is due to the introduction of the new visa system (VIS) applicable to all member-states of the Schengen Area.

Visa applications will only be accepted after appointment.

To book an appointment, please call 02-4492550 ext. 208, from 09:00 to 12:00. We strongly recommend that you schedule your appointment several weeks in advance of any planned travel. All applicants are advised to submit their visa application minimum 3 weeks before travel dates.

INFORMATION ON BIOMETRIC DATA COLLECTION

Starting from 02 October 2012, visa applicants' biometric data (a digital photograph and 10 fingerprint scans), are also collected at the time of application.

This is due to the new Visa Information System (VIS) that started operations in the Gulf region (Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen).

The implementation of the VIS is not specific to the Gulf region. The VIS first started operations in North Africa, in October 2011, and in the Near East, in May 2012. Over the coming years the VIS will be deployed progressively in all Schengen States' consulates worldwide.

The use of biometric identifiers during the visa application process will protect applicants better against identity theft. It will also prevent false identifications which in certain cases lead to the refusal of the visa or to refuse entry to a person who is entitled to enter.

The use of biometric technology guarantees safe, accurate and efficient procedures. The fingerprinting is not to be associated with crime. It is used commonly inside the EU to make travel documents more secure (e.g. when issuing passports for EU citizens including diplomats).

Visa applicants will only have to come to the Consular Office for the collection of fingerprints every 5 years and the procedure for the collection of biometric identifiers is very quick, simple and discreet. During this 5 year period, the fingerprints will be copied from the first visa applications, so that frequent travelers will only have to complete the procedure once within this period.

Biometrics will be collected using a quick, discreet and non-intrusive process that captures a facial image with a digital camera and a 10-digit fingerprint scan with a digital finger scanner.

Your face must be clearly visible for a photograph to be taken. This means that you cannot:  have hair that covers the eyes  wear a hat or scarf or any other item that obscures the face, hair or neck (with the exception of religious head coverings detailed below:

If you wear a head or neck covering for religious reasons you must ensure your face is clearly visible, from the bottom of your chin to above your eyebrows including both cheeks. If possible both ears should also be displayed. You may also need to remove your glasses when the photograph is taken. EMBASSY OF THE HELLENIC REBUBLIC ABU DHABI – U.A.E.

If you have cut or damaged your fingertips, you should make an appointment with the Greece Visa Application Centre when the injury has healed.

If you refuse to submit your biometric data, your visa application cannot be processed.

Exemptions from the obligation of fingerprinting are provided for: - Children under the age of 12; - Persons for whom fingerprinting is physically impossible; - Heads of State or government and members of a national government with accompanying spouses, and the members of their official delegation when they are invited by Member States' governments or by international organizations for an official purpose; - Sovereigns and other senior members of a royal family, when they are invited by Member States' government or by international organization for an official purpose.

Not exempted: - Government representatives and officials travelling to attend regular political and technical dialogue meetings with the EU (senior officials meetings, subcommittees etc.). - Holders of diplomatic passports (however, they may be exempted from the visa requirement under visa waivers granted by certain EU Member States).
