UNT Parent Association Regular General Meeting Minutes September 24, 2011

The general meeting of the UNT Parent Association was called to order at 11:04 a.m., Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the UNT Gateway Center, University of North Texas, Denton, Texas with President Brian Richman presiding and Secretary Colleen M. Schiebold present. Special Guest: Blake Windham, President of Student Government Association, made a short presentation on current initiatives before the formal general meeting commenced. He spoke on the proposal for a new Student Union that will have various designs presented for a student vote. He also mentioned that John Legend will speak at the Equity and Diversity Conference on February 7, 2012. Officers' reports: The President reported on memberships and volunteerism. He stated that there are 1,224 total members, with 427 new members added this year. Overall membership is down 65 members from the previous year, however he conjectured that membership may increase both during 2011 Family Weekend and again in the spring of 2012. He eluded that the smaller numbers may be due to the current economic downturn. He also reported that a substantial number of volunteers, 62, volunteered for various activities in 2010-2011. These volunteer were honored at a parent reception held at the new Alumni Pavilion on September 23, 2011. The Treasurer reported a starting balance of $48, 379, total revenue $106, 981, expenses totaling $73, 773.91 and an ending balance of $33, 207.40 as of this date to be carried into the new fiscal year. Jamie Blanton provided additional detail including commenting that merchandise expenditures have increased likely to the new modernized design. She also added that 10% of 1 year memberships, 10% of 2 year memberships and $200 of lifetime memberships are contributed to the scholarship endowment fund. The interest accrued form the endowment pays for the academic scholarships which are currently funded to support three scholarships. The minutes of the previous general meeting held on April 30, 2011 were approved by committee prior to this meeting. Copies of the minutes were provided to those present. University Reports: Jaime Blanton, Coordinator of Parent Programs, inquired if there may be interest in establishing regional parent association groups and asked anyone interested to email the Parent Association at UNT. She shared that membership cards are in process to be mailed pending final approval and printing. The new plastic key card design allows parents to share the card with their students to receive 10% discounting at the UNT Bookstore. Melissa McGuire, Director of the Orientation and Transitions Program, reported that the freshman class of 2011 is 9% larger and entered with slightly higher SAT scores. Student diversity was reported as 42% non-Anglo. She said that as there was a large graduating class in spring 2011, the total population for this school year has decreased 1%. Transfer students have decreased 6%. Finalized student population numbers will not be made available until the 20th class day. As of this date there are 35, 741 students. The University has a projected enrollment of 46, 000 by 2016. She also recognized Burns Family and Rose Van Meter for their active role in the Parent Association. Both Debbie Burns and Rose Van Meter are past Presidents who have continued to support the Parent Association long after their student’s graduation. New Business: Election of Officers The Secretary read the slate of nominations for 2011-2012; President –Elect Bill Louthan, Vice President Sheryl Jordan, Secretary Colleen M. Schiebold, Treasurer Stacy Robinson, Parliamentarian Sheri Kantner and three candidates for Historian Susie Thornton, Cynthia Hickman and Ed Gillis. Each nominee present was allowed a brief talk on their experience and interest in the position. Elizabeth Cheney as President elect automatically assumes the position as President. The position of President –Elect was unopposed. Bill Louthan received unanimous vote in favor and was therefore elected President Elect. The position of Vice -President was unopposed. Sheryl Jordan received unanimous vote in favor and was therefore elected Vice President. The position of Secretary was unopposed. Colleen Schiebold received unanimous vote in favor and was therefore elected Secretary. The position of Treasurer was unopposed. Stacy Robinson received unanimous vote in favor and was therefore elected Treasurer. The position of Parliamentarian was unopposed. Sheri Kantner received unanimous vote in favor and was therefore elected Parliamentarian. An election was called for position of Historian as there were three candidates. The final Teller counted vote: Susi Thornton 43 votes, Cynthia Hickman 0 votes and Ed Gillis received 1 vote. Total number of votes counted was 44. Susi Thornton was elected Historian. Budget Approval The proposed budget for 2011-2012 was read and discussed. Jamie Blanton provided details on specific budgeted items. $33,000 is carried into this school year including projected memberships, merchandise, pizza coupons and donations revenue. The Parent Association will sponsor $1500 for community send-off parties with the bulk of costs being paid by the Office of Transitions. Approve 2011-2012 Parent Association Budget Motion: Moved by Brian Richman that the proposed budget for 2011-2012 be adopted by the Parent Association as read. Motion was debated. Motion: Moved by Mary Miner that the proposed budget be amended to remove the expenditure of pizza coupons and sell the remaining pizza certificates in inventory. Motion was debated, seconded, carried. Motion: Moved by Veronica Richardson that the previous motion moved by Mary Miner be amended to read as the proposed budget should be amended to remove the expenditure of $2300 for pizza coupons and sell the remaining pizza certificates in inventory. Motion was debated, seconded, carried.
