Directions: You have several choices for the activities you will complete for this Imperialism activity. You even get to decide what grade you will make on this unit. First, complete enough Level 1 activities to earn 70 points, then proceed to Level 2. Each activity should be placed on a PowerPoint slide. Title your powerpoint like this: lastnamefirstnameperiodimperialism

LEVEL 1: (Choose activities up to 70 points): You may not advance to Level 2 until you have completed the Level 1 activities for 70 points. You will only receive 70 points for this, no matter how many activities you do. USE CHAPTER 24 IN YOUR AP TEXTBOOK.

REQUIRED FOR ALL STUDENTS:

______1. Complete the illustrated definitions for Imperialism. (10 points)

______2. Watch the BrainPop called British Empire. Take the quiz until you make 100. Open your computer menu so you can see your name along with the quiz results and grade. Take a screen shot. CHOOSE FROM THE FOLLOWING:

______Color in and Label all the areas on the map that the British controlled during the Age of Imperialism. Pick up a map form from the classroom or print one off from my wiki. (5 Points)

______Create a comic strip with at least 3 different frames depicting a historic event that occurred during the Age of Imperialism. Include a brief description below each picture of what is occurring in each frame. You may draw these by hand if you are a VERY GOOD artist. ______Create a magazine advertisement for the world to see explaining 3 details of the Monroe Doctrine. Use at least 3 pictures in this advertisement. (15 points)

______Create an acrostic poem using all the letters in Imperialism. Every sentence that you write must explain some aspect of Imperialism. Hint: use the words on your vocabulary and the Glencoe textbook, pages 647-677, to find information. (10 points)

______Download the illustrated outline on Imperialism from my wiki. Using the page numbers on the outline complete the bullet list below each heading. You will also need to find pictures for each column. (15 points) ______Create a PowerPoint slide on the Suez Canal explaining its importance. Provide a map locating it. (5 Points)

______Create a PowerPoint slide on the Panama Canal explaining its importance. Provide a map locating it. Use pages 674-675 in the Glencoe textbook to help you. (5 points)

______Using the map on page 655 in the Glencoe textbook, make a list of the countries who colonized Africa. On your slide include a map showing where each European country had control. (5 points)

Level 2: (choose one)

______Construct a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting two different imperial powers. Give examples of how each power treated the indigenous populations and why. Give at least 3 examples on similarities and differences. (15 points) Choose 2 of the following imperial powers; Spain Britain Belgium France Germany

______Write a 2 page paper with at least 3 paragraphs explaining why the Europeans had an advantage over the African and Indian colonies. Include why Europeans wanted to expand their influence. (15 points)

______Write a letter to the American President (be sure to find out who the U.S. president was during this war from the point of view of Mexico in the Mexican-American War. Be sure to include at least 3 grievances that Mexico had against the United States expanding their dominance. (15 points)

Level 3: If you want to earn an A you have to complete Level 3!

______You are a news reporter reporting to a group of high school students on Russia’s attempted annexation of Crimea this year. Your report should include information all the way back to the Crimean War which involved Russia, the Ottoman Empire, Austria, and the British. Explain the reason for the Crimea War and its outcome. In your newscast make comparisons between Russia’s reasons for wanting the Crimea and its access to the Black Sea in the nineteenth century and in the 21st century. Your news report can take the form of a blog, a newspaper article, or a television newscast. This activity may be done with a partner. If you choose a television newscast, remember you have a very small amount of time to produce this. (20 points)
