Re: Academic Research Invitation for NAME

Dear NAME:

I am pleased to invite you to the DEPT/DIVISION as a Research Award Recipient for the period of START DATE to END DATE.

While in Canada, your financial support will be through a research award from NAME OF AGENCY/AWARD. The University of Toronto will provide you with office space, access to our academic seminars, library resources, and internet access [EDIT WHAT IS BEING PROVIDED AS NEEDED].

During your stay you will be contributing to the NAME OF PROJECT by BRIEF SUMMARY of DUTIES.

As a direct recipient of a research award which is based on academic excellence, you may be able to enter Canada as a Research Award Recipient and you will be exempt from a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) pursuant to R205(c)(ii) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act , Labour Market Exemption Code, C44. You will, however, require a work permit. The processing fee for a work permit is currently CAD $155, which must be paid at the time you apply for a work permit.

In addition to a work permit, you may be required to obtain additional documentation such as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) applicable to certain countries whose citizens require a visa to travel to Canada. If you do not require a TRV, you will likely require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) prior to entering Canada by air. Effective November 9, 2016 all foreign nationals (excluding United States citizens) who do not require a TRV must obtain an eTA. To determine whether you require a TRV or an eTA, please refer to: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp. For more information regarding the eTA please visit: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta-start.asp

For visits to Canada of 6 months or longer, individuals who have resided in certain countries require prior medical examinations. To determine if you require a medical please refer to: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/medical/dcl.asp

If you do not require a TRV or a medical, you are permitted to apply for your work permit directly at an immigration office at a Canadian Port of Entry (airport or land border crossing) as you arrive in Canada.

Should you require a TRV, in order to obtain the necessary documents, including a work permit, you must refer to the Canada Immigration webpage to determine how and where you may file an online application: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/e-services/mycic.asp

The following documents must be presented during the online application, or in person at the port of entry, to Canada Immigration:  This letter of invitation  A copy of your research award which notes that you are the direct recipient  A completed application for a work permit (if applying online to a Canadian Consulate/Embassy/High Commission). Please see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/work.asp  A valid passport during your entire stay in Canada  The Offer of Employment A# Number from the CIC provided to you by the Department

As you are not an employee or student of the University, you will not be covered by the University’s Workplace Insurance.
