What is Literature?

Horror = [the social] the abnormal, atypical, or extreme conflict (‘Evil’ Action, victimization, brutal exercise of power) + [the psychological] Fear/Grotesque/breakdown + [the physical] [actions on the body]

Horror lit and film as storytelling (Joyride & stimulation, safe escapism) OR Message dominant (lesson, education, roleplay) or visual/visceral-descriptive illustration of Evil (What goes on in Hell?) WORLD GONE MAD/ GROUP MADNESS

First LESSON: Horror literature and film about: ‘World Gone Mad‘

Handout: CLASSIFICATION CHART

QUESTION: Do people still have personal responsibility if the world has gone mad? Is the system guilty or each individual guilty within it? Nazi soldier vs Nazi command….

Could you kill your best friend?

If the world is insane, is it dumb to be traditionally ‘heroic’ to the point of losing/suffering/dying? The guy/girl who escapes the haunted house but returns to try to find a friend? Report bullying? Report a drug dealer in your neighborhood? If you are a prisoner, to report a rape in prison of someone you don’t know? Abu Ghraib whistleblower? Is traditional heroism (rules, morals never bend) actually insane or dysfunctional in a ‘World Gone Mad?’ NON FICTION:

Look for 3 aspects of horror in a real world event (social, psychological, physical):

(Abu Ghraib clip…) Justified Horror or Propaganda against a necessary evil (evil to defeat evil)… http://www.ted.com/talks/philip_zimbardo_on_the_psychology_of_evil.html

Why the filmic qualities? Music? Panning? Only showing these pics and not against US POW’s?

In a World Gone Mad there is the “Lucifer Effect:” Madness (especially as brutality) grows in small steps until it dominates a group and becomes ‘A World Gone Madder’ … People can choose to become monsters or heroes, even if the situation is INSANE/OUT OF CONTROL?

7 min. Is terrorism justified against a World Gone Mad? Is terrorism against EVIL evil?
