OBTAINING THE CHILD DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE (CDA) CREDENTIAL

1. Order the Essentials for Child Development Associates (2nd Edition) book online at www.cdacouncil.org or by calling 1-800-424-4310 2. Complete a total of 120 hours of training ( training can not be more than 5 years old at the time you apply for your CDA) 3. Order the CDA assessment application packet that corresponds with your work setting (Infant/Toddler, Preschool, or Family Child Care). This can be found online at www.cdacouncil.org or by calling 1-800-424-4310 4. Apply for Mini-grant with your Professional Development Counselor 5. Make sure your resource file is complete and in order 6. Obtain an advisor 7. Have parents complete questionnaires (must get 75% back) –can not be more than 6 months old at the time you apply for your CDA-these must be in sealed envelopes 8. Have advisor complete your formal observation, seal it in an envelope, and give it to you for the council rep. –can not be more than 6 months old at the time you apply for your CDA and you must keep this sealed. 9. Apply for CDA (verification visit from council rep). Here is a list of things that must be included with your application: a. A completed application (make sure your advisor and director signs and dates) b. Have transcript or log sheet completed by college or training agency (or High School) c. Letter verifying your hours are complete d. CDA Mini-grant award letter or check for $325.00

AFTER YOU APPLY FOR VERIFICATION VISIT

1) Council Rep. will call to schedule verification visit – make sure you get a phone number for the rep in case an emergency arises

2) Make sure you have everything you need ready for the council rep. when he/she arrives:  Your resource file  Sealed Parent questionnaires  Sealed CDA observation  Extra copy of autobiography for the council  Extra copy of Statements of Competence for the council  Photo ID  Original CPR and First Aid Card
