Dual Credit English 101/102 2016-17 Summer Reading

Summer Reading Dual Credit English 101/102 Please purchase and read the following titles and complete the corresponding assignments over the summer to prepare for the Dual Credit course. Note: one assignment must be emailed before the first class.

1. How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster Assignment

After reading the book, choose 3 chapters that interest you. Write a 250 word response to each of the 3 chapters you selected referencing other stories you have read in high school. Before the first day of class Email all 3 responses in the TEXT of your email to: [email protected]

2. by George Orwell 1984 Assignments

(First Day of Class) Reading Test on 1984 Handwritten Annotated Notes from your reading submitted (minimum of 5 pages)

Trident Technical College Information: You should have qualified for the course with Guidance (Compass Test, ACT/SAT scores). Any questions can be directed to your Guidance Counselor or [email protected], the TTC Dual Credit liaison. The TTC withdrawal dates for the fall semester are the 3rd day of class for compressed 9-week classes. Each course is 3 college credits (6 total credits for 101/102).

Summer Reading: The two books: 1984 (Orwell) and How to Read like a Professor (Foster), are your responsibility to purchase and have in class. We will be referring to Foster throughout the course. See the summer reading assessments: 1 assignment is due before class starts and 2 others are due on the first day of class.

TextBooks and Additional Supplies: Please have books for the first day of class. The textbooks are available at the TTC bookstore. *Students with Free or Reduced Lunch status qualify for a textbook loan. *TTC requires each student to have the most up to date edition of the textbook that comes with the online Writing Lab access code. If you purchase a book without a code, codes are available from TTC for approximately $100. Also, each of you will need access to a computer, a good dictionary, a notebook for taking notes in class, and pocket folders for handing in your assignments. More than anything else, you must have respect for deadlines and a desire to improve your critical thinking and written communication skills.
