Review Sheet For A Long Way Gone Quiz Chapters 9-15

Level 1: Facts it would be important to know:

About Sierra Leone-

About the Civil War-

About Ishmael-

Important places in the story-

Significant events in the story (in the order in which they happen) *Note, I often use level one information in a level 2 or level 3 question, so you’ll need to be able to think about these things, not just write them down as an answer.

Level 2:

 If given a jumbled list of events from the story, you need to be able to put them in order

 Be able to make a t-chart comparing and contrasting Ishmael before and after he became a child soldier

 Key Quotes from the Story- you need to be able to write about how it connects to the story and why it’s important.

o “When I was very little, my father used to say, ‘If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen’” (54).

o “Our innocence had been replaced by fear and we had become monsters. There was nothing we could do about it” (55).

o “I resisted thinking by listening to the sound of the forest as songs of birds collided with the shouting of monkeys and the cackle of baboons” (52).

o “I had a tent to myself, which I never slept in because sleep never came to me” (125).

o “My squad was my family, my gun was my provider and protector, and my rule was to kill or be killed” (127). o “I walked up and down on the verandah, restless in my new environment. My head began to hurt” (137).

Level 3: Deep thinking questions (the type you might need to answer in a paragraph)- Brainstorm some bullet point answers first.

o Can people recover from serious trauma like what the child soldiers have experienced in the war? What might help them do that?

o In the short "New York City, 1998" prologue that begins the memoir, Ishmael's friend find some things about his past to be "cool." If they had read this book, do you think they would still feel that way? Why or why not?

o It must have been painful for Ishmael to remember what his life was like in order to write this book. Why do you think he was willing to face that pain?

o Ishmael Beah was insane when he was a soldier. Agree or disagree and support it with details you remember from the story
