Course Description: This course is intended to introduce students to medical terminology by providing a study of word origins and structures; through the introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviations and symbols, surgical procedures, medical specialties, and diagnostic procedures.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student(s) will be able to: 1) develop a familiarity and comfort with using medical terms. 2) Correctly spell, pronounce, define, and identify words and word parts. 3) Build and use medical terms and abbreviations correctly. 4) Understand readings that use medical terms and abbreviations. 5) Identify and apply medical terms according to the proper body systems through reinforced knowledge of anatomy and physiology. 6) Understand various aspects of pathology, surgical and diagnostic procedures.

Competencies: 1) Pronounce medical terms correctly. 2) Discuss terms that are associated with various diseases. 3) Spell and define medical terms correctly. 4) Identify and use common abbreviations used in the medical field. GRADING SCALE A 90-100 B+ 85-89 B 80-84 C+ 75-79 C 70-74 D+ 65-69 D 60-64 F Below 60

Grading: Students will be required to complete assignments, projects, weekly word quizzes and tests. Included in this course is a Mid term (9th week) Exam and a Final Exam. In between exams we will have weekly terminology quizzes, assignments, and assessments. The rubric is written below:

Quizzes—15 @ 40 points = 600 points Tests—2 @ 300 points = 600 points Daily assignments approximately 600 points 33% comes from each of these categories.

Articulated credit (Southeast Community College) Students are allowed to receive articulated credit through Southeast Community College provided they pass the final exam given to them through SCC. The final exam that they give is also the final exam in the course. Should the student pass the final exam and demonstrate proficiency through SCC, they will be granted articulated credits for Medical Terminology with Southeast Community College. Expectations: 1) Students are expected to be in their assigned seat ready to work when bell rings. 2) YOU are responsible for all work to be made up during absences. 3) Required to bring planner, notebook, pen/pencil to class daily. NO EXCEPTIONS 4) Follow the due process tardy and truancy policy. 5) No student has the right to prohibit others right to learn. 6) No food or beverages in class. 7) SEE AVEY’S CLASS RULES FOR OTHER RULES.
