SERM Career Project

SERM Career Project Objective: Over the next six days, you will explore occupations within the SER industries, as well as identify your personal skills, interests, and career pathways. You will then develop a resume and cover letter. In addition, you will complete a job application form and describe the interview process. Finally, on exam day, you will present the information obtained on your career and present to the class. DAY 1:

Interest Survey: Fill out the “Interest Survey” given in class. After completing the survey, you will receive a “Totals” sheet with 16 different fields. Tally your results and list your top 3 fields.

Personal Profile: Go to: http://www.futureproofyourcareer.com. Here you will click on the “Career Self- Assessment” link. Enter your name and email address, and being the assessment. Once you are finished, use the results to fill out the following table: DAY 2:

Career Exploration: Go to http://www.bls.gov/ooh/. Using the chart given to you in class, research 5 potential job fields you might be interested in. You may not choose jobs such as athletes/coaches/referees. Be sure to click through each tab of your selected fields to locate the information required in the chart. From your list of 5 potential job fields, choose 3 to find a career. Use websites such as www.monster.com and www.careerbuilder.com to find a job that fits into that field. Make sure that your job relates to the sports, entertainment and recreation industry (search for your field and add “sports” or “entertainment” to your query. For your job, provide the following information in the chart provided: employer, location, brief description of the job, and most importantly, why it appeals to you?

DAY 3:

Job Application and Interview Process: Go to www.sportscareers.com and click on “Job Search FAQ’s”. Once you have done that, click on each of the following:

1. Can internships lead to full-time jobs?

2. Common interview questions

3. Experience and Transition into the Sports Industry

4. How can college students build a network?

5. Questions to ask the interviewer

6. Using your cover letter to your advantage

7. What about my references?

8. What is the best way to send a resume via email?

9. What should I research before an interview? In the “Career Resource” folder, open the “What You Need to Know” document and fill in the worksheet.

Job Application Once you have turned in the “What You Need to Know” worksheet, you can get a job application from me and fill it out.

Day 4/5:

Resume and Cover Letter Workshop: Using your notes from today’s lesson fill out the resume and cover letter worksheets in your packets. Make sure you answer each part completely and honestly. Make sure to open the resume workbook document located in your block’s global folder. This workbook will contain resume tips and samples. Make sure to complete the “Resume Draft Format” at the end of the resume packet. Make sure you hold on to these worksheets. They will help you create your actual resume and cover letter in the next few classes.

Develop a Cover Letter, Resume, and Reference Sheet: For this part, you will choose ONE of the eight jobs from the “Career Exploration” section. This is the job that you will be applying for.

Resume

Directions:

1. Open your block’s folder on the Global Drive and select the “Resume Template”. This is the template you will use for your resume. You may choose a different template if you’d like.

2. Once the template is open, fill it in with your basic information, education info, work experience, awards and extracurricular activities to date. Don’t forget any volunteer work, babysitting, and lawn mowing. Those are jobs!

3. When you are finished, submit your resume into your block’s Inbox on the Global Drive.

Cover Letter

Directions:

1. Open your block’s folder in the Global Drive and select the “Cover Letter Template”. This is the template that you will use for your cover letter. You may choose a different template if you’d like. 2. To help with your cover letter, read through the "Cover_Letter_How_To_and_Example.pdf" file. This will help you organize your cover letter correctly. Make sure that you are creating the cover letter for the job you are applying for.

3. When you are finished, submit your cover letter into your block’s Inbox on the Global Drive.

References Sheet

Directions:

1. Open your block’s folder in the Global Drive and click on the “References Example” PDF. This will show you what a reference sheet should look like.

2. Now, using Microsoft Word, create your own reference sheet. Remember, do not include family members on your reference sheet.

Day 6+:

Final Step: PowerPoint about you and your dream SER job.

Your PowerPoint will need to include the following slides, but is not limited to this information:

1. Create a chart with information from the 5 job fields from Day 1

2. Share with the class interesting information about you from your online career test

3. Discuss the job you picked and why you would enjoy having this job (minimum of 2 slides)

4. Screen shot your resume, cover letter, and references page into your PPT

5. Include three interesting facts you learned from the “What You Need to Know” worksheet

6. You should have a minimum of 10 slides. 7. You will be graded on presentation skills

a. Using “um” or “uh” will lose points

b. Back facing the audience will lose points
