Student Poster Competition

HERODOT ESRI Europe Student Poster Competition

The HERODOT ESRI Europe 2007 conferences will include a Student Poster Competition. The prizes consist of attendance at the HERODOT and ESRI Europe User Conference in Stockholm Sweden, September 24-28th 2007 inclusive. Poster prize winners will be presented with their certificates during these events.

The purpose of this Student Poster Competition is to provide students with an opportunity to practice their visual and written communication skills. It is hoped that they will share their work with others and improve the visibility of student research. The awards will recognise and reward excellence in student research, and foster sharing of ideas and research in undergraduate and postgraduate research These awards will be a prestigious addition to the student's CV.

The poster entry must be submitted by email to [email protected] as two files. The poster should be submitted as a pdf file and the second file is a completed competition entry document including an abstract (of no more than 100 words to describe and explain the poster) and key words.

The posters will be reviewed by members of HERODOT-ESRI Europe and the decision of the judges will be final. The winners will be notified and invited to produce a paper- based poster to be displayed during conference events. Posters will also be displayed digitally on the HERODOT Web site (http://www.herodot.net).

Prizes In 2007 there are two prizes: a) for the best undergraduate poster (Bachelors) b) for the best postgraduate poster (Masters, Doctorate)

These two winners will be invited as their prize to attend the HERODOT and ESRI Europe User conferences in Stockholm, Sweden. Travel will be paid (only from European locations) to come to Stockholm and while there, accommodation and meals will be provided for the winners. The conference fees will be waived and the winners will also receive certificates and other awards.

Other awards Students who have produced “highly commended” posters will receive certificates and other awards by post.

Submission Details Only one entry is permitted per student. The deadline is July 15th 2007, 17.00 GMT. Students must be registered at a European HERODOT member institution, which is eligible for funding support.

Student Poster details Student Poster competition entries must have the following criteria for submission:  A lead author of the poster, the student should have performed most of the work.  The poster must present original work of the student.  The entry should be from a graduate or undergraduate student registered during the 2006-2007 academic year at a HERODOT European member institution, eligible for funding support.  Entrants must submit only one poster as the lead author for consideration.  Abstract and poster submission deadline: 15th July 2007 via email to [email protected] 17.00 GMT  Presence at the conferences will be expected during the scheduled dates and times in Stockholm.  The poster size should be designed to be maximum 1.5m x 1.5m The poster must deal with an aspect of Geographical studies and the use of Geoinformation. Students from all areas of Geography research and related disciplines are eligible to participate. This includes human, physical, environmental and applied geography and also students of geographical education,

Poster Judging Criteria Student poster prizes will be presented to entrants who have demonstrated outstanding research, visual and written skills through a poster and abstract. The poster selection criteria are:  Student is first author of the poster.  Work is of high quality and has been done by the student.  Abstract clearly describes the work and includes results.  Student has not won the student prize previously. At the time of judging the judges will evaluate:  Clarity of presentation.  Depth of knowledge.  Degree of the understanding present in the poster.  Relevance of the work to the use of geoinformation in Geography.
