SOWK 2310 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL WELFARE

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION Introduction to the human service delivery system in the United States, with an emphasis on the social work profession: its mission, philosophy, ethics, values, diverse fields, and ethno-cultural perspectives. Observations of social service agencies and guest speakers provide a career orientation to the social work profession. Volunteer experience required.

II. COURSE OBJECTIVES Knowledge:  to identify some key historical trends and philosophies that influenced the development of social welfare institutions and;  to identify and discuss some key historical trends and philosophies that influenced the development of the social work profession.

Values:  to recognize the NASW Code of Ethics as the basis for ethical conduct in social welfare policy formulation;  to develop a commitment to social and economic justice and;  to recognize the dignity and worth of individuals in need.

Skills:  to demonstrate the ability to analyze current social welfare policies against the backdrop of historical and contemporary social and political forces.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS and GRADING Attendance 8 pts. Attendance will be worth eight points. Any student missing more than three class sessions will loose all attendance points. In addition, any student missing more than three class sessions risks being withdrawn from the class with a grade of W if the absences occur prior to the first two weeks of class. A grade of F will be assigned if the total class sessions missed exceeds three after the first two weeks of the course. Students wishing to drop a course and receive a grade of W must do so prior to Friday, June 10. Any dropping of a course after that time will result in an automatic grade of F. This is in accordance with the university policy. Any student who anticipates problems adhering to the course attendance policy should arrange a meeting with the professor for the course as soon as possible. Participation 12 pts. Each student will be expected to come to class prepared by having read the assigned readings. In addition, each student will submit a typewritten comment or question to the professor at the beginning of each Monday class session. The question or comment should be related to specific readings for the class, or issues/concerns related to the guest speakers or films. Questions/comments will be submitted on 6/6/2005 (4 pts), 6/13/2005 (4 pts), and 6/20/2005 (4 pts). Chapter Quizzes 45 pts. There will be three (3) quizzes on the required readings (chapters and any additional handouts). Each quiz will be given on Friday and each quiz will be worth fifteen (15) pts. Makeup quizzes will not be allowed. Comprehensive Final Examination 35 pts. The final examination will be given in the regular classroom. Date: Friday, June 24. Time: 11:40 AM – 1:50 PM

Attendance: 8 pts. 100-90 pts. A Participation: 12 pts. 89-80 pts. B Quizzes: 45 pts. 79-70 pts. C Final Exam: 35 pts. 69-60 pts D Total Points 100 pts. Below 59 pts. F
