 Christmas for Christopher House – Toy collection. In effort to support the African American men of the Christopher Place Initiative (a program which provides transitional housing, employment training, and sobriety support), and other families who have voluntarily decided to commit to turn their lives around a walk on a positive path, toys are being collected for kids to enable men to be able to give gifts to their kids for Christmas. Unwrapped toys, books, and games will be accepted at the following locations until December 16th: Greater Baltimore Urban League, Urban Leadership Institute, State Farm Insurance- John Bugg III, Youth Advocate Program, Panache Hair Salon, Innovative Hair Design, Family & Friends Barbershop, Supreme Clientele Barbershop.  Grief & Loss Program for Families with school age children in Baltimore. March Funeral Homes will be implementing its first pilot program for Roberta’s House, a grief and loss program for children and their families this coming February. We will be accepting applications for 25 families with school age children who have recently experienced a death of a family member. All applications are to be submitted by the first week in January. Peer support groups for children age 5-17 and their guardians or parents will be held for ten weeks, meeting one night a week. If you know of a family where children are involved and living in Baltimore City, please contact Annette March-Grier, at (443) 392-1348 or [email protected] and/or Dedra Layne, Program Director at (443) 386-0759 or [email protected] for further details. Volunteers are also being recruited to facilitate the programs. Volunteer applications must be received by December 22nd, 2008. Use the contact information above to receive an application.

 The White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and the United States Department of Labor Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives invites you to participate in a unique, three-part training to improve your organization’s ability to measure, manage, and communicate results.  “Breaking the Cycle” Radio Dialogue. December 21, 2008 2:00-4:00 p.m. Brother Bey, the founder of the Fraternal Order of X-Offenders, hosts a weekly radio show on W.O.L.B (1010 am) that presents community-based, ex-offender driven efforts in Baltimore and elsewhere that are helping to break the cycle of violence. The primary focus of the F.O.X.O.’s “Breaking The Cycle” Radio Dialogue is to extend discussion, increase consideration of community-driven alternatives, and initiate and expand the collective action needed to deter, decrease and prevent the pandemic of juvenile delinquency and adult criminality gripping Baltimore and many other communities. The radio show provides a voice to those attempting to change their thinking and behaviors, informing ex-offenders, their families, and others of opportunities, increasing access to strategies that work, and exposing those that don’t. 7. Baltimore advocacy group requests funding for youth programming be a priority for the state and the city. Article in the Baltimore Sun, December 11, 2008. Members of Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development want Mayor Sheila Dixon to commit to spend the first 25 percent of any economic stimulus package from the incoming Obama administration on youth center renovations. Alternatively, the group says it would be satisfied if Dixon spent a quarter of the city's Rainy Day Fund - where it keeps its budget reserves - on youth violence-prevention programs. 8. Community Conferencing Center launches new website. The Community Conferencing Center (CCC) is a conflict transformation and community justice organization that provides ways for people to safely, collectively and effectively prevent and resolve conflicts and crime. Through partnerships with people, neighborhoods, governments and institutions, the Community Conferencing Center helps Maryland communities resolve conflicts and crimes within their own communities. 10. Size of Drug Problem in Juvenile Justice Depends on Where You Look. Chapin Hall research fellow Jeffrey Butts is now a regular contributor to Reclaiming Futures Every Day, an initiative to disseminate news, research, and information on juvenile justice reform and teen drug treatment. In this entry he discusses how drug behaviors of youthful offenders at the earliest stages of justice involvement resemble those in the general population, but increase in severity among youth more deeply involved in the juvenile justice process. 12. American Foundation for Suicide Prevention launches new program to reach out to recently bereaved. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has created a new program that connects people who have recently lost a loved one to suicide with trained volunteers who are suicide survivors themselves.
