COURSE PLAN

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

An introductory course in American Sign Language developing knowledge in ASL vocabulary, cultural aspects, grammatical features, and beginning conversational comprehensive and expressive skills.

RATIONALE:

Intermediate Manual Communication is designed to provide the student with the skills needed to carry on a conversation with deaf people. The student will have a working knowledge of grammar, culture, and signs needed to minister to deaf individuals.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Identify and accurately produce ASL vocabulary. 2. Provide an explanation of the cultural aspects of ASL. 3. Identify and apply the grammatical features of ASL. 4. Demonstrate a basic conversational level of comprehension and expressive fluency when receiving and using ASL. 5. Apply skills to ministering to deaf individuals.

COURSE TEXT:

Learning American Sign Language by: Humphries and Padden. This book and accompanying DVD will be used with the succeeding ASL II class.

CREDIT HOURS: 3

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Students must attend regularly. See CCU policy for consequences. 2. Students are expected to arrive on time. 3. Students must complete the work on time or early. 4. Assignments are due at the start of the class on the day scheduled, or may be turned in early.

1 COURSE GOALS:

1. Know the Manual Alphabet and Numbers 1-30. 2. Identify and accurately produce approximately 400 vocabulary items. 3. Provide an explanation of the cultural aspects of ASL as presented in the course. 4. Identify and apply the grammatical features of ASL presented in this course. 5. Demonstrate a beginning conversational level of comprehension when receiving ASL. 6. Demonstrate a beginning conversational level of expressive fluency when using ASL.

ASSIGNMENTS 1. Students are required to complete assignments as indicated in the AGENDA. 2. Students are required to complete 3 Summaries on videotapes held on Strict Reserve in the CCU library. Summaries must be typewritten, double-spaced, at least one page in length touching the top of the second page, with one-inch margins. 10-12 point font should be used (this point is 12). Please attach a cover page that contains: a) Your name b) Your mailbox # c) The title of the videotape, and d) The date due Students will view the following tapes at the library and write a summary. Identify the differences between ASL and Signed Exact English, as you perceive it. List signs you may have learned, as well as, body language. Remember to include the title of the tape on your summary. (20pts. Ea. 60 total points) #1 "The Magic Pot," #2 "Introduction to Deaf Culture; Rules of Social Interaction," #3 "Tales from the Green Books"

3. Students will sign paragraphs and take quizzes each week consisting of receptive and expressive skills. These quizzes will include vocabulary, grammatical structure, and culture. Students will take a mid-term and final exam.

4. Students will be required to spend one hour at a deaf event, and type a two-page summary, and a cover page (see #2 for requirements). (50pts.) This could include one of the following: a. Deaf Worship Service at Western Hills Church of Christ, 10:40 am, Sundays (must include lunch afterwards) b. Silent Dinners, the first Friday of each month at a local mall (TBA) c. Deaf Bible Study d. Other - Must have prior approval with instructor

2 5. Students will be required to write and sign ten questions for the Deaf Panel. (10 pts) . a. Deaf Panel will consist of some local deaf individuals and parents of the Deaf who will share their experiences. b. You are required to have ten questions to sign to the panelists. c. Be prepared to fingerspell your name.

6. Students will be required to sign a song. (50pts.) a. The song of choice must be a Christian song. b. The easiest songs are moderate in speed with much repetition. c. Your instructor and other past sign language students are available for help, but you must schedule ahead. Choose the song you would like to sign, and write/type out the words on paper (triple space). d. You will be videotaped.

7. Students must attend regularly. 10 pts. Will be added for perfect attendance. See me for details. Except for highly unusual circumstances, there will be no extra credit work.

8. You will attend Deaf Live Lab at Cincinnati State. You must have your hours signed to verify your attendance. You must attend a minimum of four hours. Each hour will be worth fifty points. (200pts.)

GRADING SCALE All the possible points will be totaled and based on a percentage using CCU's grading system.
