48Th Annual High School Honors Math Contest

Seventh Annual High School Honors Statistics Contest Saturday, April 27, 2013

This year, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), in conjunction with the Greater San Diego Math Council (GSDMC), the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE), and the San Diego Chapter of the American Statistical Association (SDASA) will sponsor the Sixth Annual High School Honors Statistics Contest at UCSD on Saturday, April 27, 2013 beginning at 7:45 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m.

The Contest will consist of two exams. The first exam is a 25 multiple-choice question, 60-minute exam. The second exam is a 4 written-response question, 90-minute exam. Both parts of the exam will cover the AP Placement Probability and Statistics and Probability and Statistics California Mathematics Content Standards, and the College Board AP Statistics content. Students may keep the Part I (multiple-choice) exam.

Each high school can enter a team of 3-8 members. Teams compete in a single (open) division. The top three individual scores in each part will determine the team score. Coaches of the top three teams will receive an engraved perpetual plaque. Every team member will receive a certificate of participation. Individual awards will be presented to the top 10 students who have the highest combined scores on Parts 1 and 2. Home-schooled students are eligible to compete for individual awards.

An awards banquet hosted by the UCSD Mathematics Department is scheduled for the evening of May 8 at the UCSD Faculty Club. Details will be announced on the contest day. The awards dinner serves a greater purpose than just the presentation of awards; it celebrates the achievements of some of our best students and recognizes the efforts of their teachers and coaches. All participants and their team coaches are encouraged to attend the awards dinner. Selected students will present their solutions to the Part 2 problems. A guest speaker will present a topic of interest. At the conclusion of the banquet, the event chair and the GSDMC President present awards. The American Statistical Association is sponsoring three $100 scholarships for the top three students, and Texas Instruments is sponsoring prizes for the top five students and the top three coaches.

If you're interested in entering a team, so that we may know your intent and include you in our planning please send an email to Jameson Rienick as early as possible at [email protected]. The deadline is April 25th to submit a list of team members to Jameson.
