Library Instruction Lesson 5th Grade Encyclopedia Lesson

Resource Title 5th Grade Encyclopedia Lesson File Name 5th Grade Encyclopedia Lesson.doc Resource Description Using 4th science SOL topics (which are tested in 5th (This is information grade) the student uses the print encyclopedias found about the resource.) in the reference collection of the library. In this lesson the student will:

 Identify the difference between the reference collection and the regular collection  Understand that reference resources are not meant to be read in their entirety  Understand that encyclopedias are sources of information about people, places, and things  Use an encyclopedia to find information on a topic  Use guidewords and alphabetical arrangement to locate information in an encyclopedia  Write a paragraph using notes taken from an encyclopedia

Ask students if they remember using an encyclopedia Link to search for information about a topic. Ask students if they remember how the encyclopedia is arranged (i.e. chapters? alphabetically?).

 Show students the introductory PowerPoint Engage (Encyclopedias.ppt) about encyclopedias and  Show students the worksheet (5th Grade Educate Encyclopedia Worksheet.doc)  Model a search on a topic for students  Show students how to choose the appropriate volume  Model using guide words to help you find your topic  Model reading the information and putting the information in your own words on the worksheet  Model using phrases and bullets for your notes  Model writing the bibliographic citation for the article

Students reflect on the difference between using an Reflect encyclopedia and a non fiction book to locate information on a topic. Students reflect on wring the bibliographic citation for their encyclopedia article.

Tell students that they learned to search for a topic Now and using a print encyclopedia today. Now they can use the Then encyclopedia to search for information on any topic. Next lesson they will use their notes to write a paragraph about their topic.
