ALDEN OF THE 13 UNITED STATES AIR FORCE WHILE EN ROUTE TO A 14 TOUR OF MILITARY DUTY IN AFGHANISTAN, AND TO 15 EXPRESS TO HIS FAMILY THE DEEPEST APPRECIATION 16 OF A GRATEFUL STATE AND NATION FOR HIS LIFE, 17 SACRIFICE, AND SERVICE. 18 19 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, 20 on behalf of all South Carolinians, acknowledge with deep 21 appreciation the great sacrifice that the men and women of the 22 United States Armed Forces make for the ideals of freedom and 23 justice, which are so richly enjoyed in this nation; and 24 25 Whereas, Senior Airman Nicholas J. Alden of the United States 26 Air Force stands high among those servicemen and women so 27 honored by their country; and 28 29 Whereas, as a committed serviceman, Senior Airman Nicholas J. 30 Alden was assigned to the 48th Security Forces Squadron, RAF 31 Lakenheath, United Kingdom. Answering the call of his country, 32 he left his family and home to serve abroad as a part of the war on 33 terror. His first tour of duty, already completed, had taken him to 34 Iraq; for this second tour, he was deployed to Afghanistan; and 35 36 Whereas, on March 2, 2011, at the age of twentyfive, Senior 37 Airman Alden lost his life for the cause of freedom while on his 38 way to a tour of duty in Afghanistan, dying as a result of gunfire 39 by an enemy extremist at the Frankfurt Airport in Germany; and 40 41 Whereas, the General Assembly offers its deepest sympathy to 42 Senior Airman Alden’s family in their loss: his wife, Patricia

[1279] 2 1 “Trish” Brooks Alden; his daughter, Lily; his son, William; his 2 mother, Cathy Garner; and his father, James Alden; and 3 4 Whereas, there is no greater or more courageous sacrifice a man 5 can make than to lay down his life for a noble cause, as Senior 6 Airman Nicholas J. Alden has done, and to honor his valor, Senior 7 Airman Alden has been named a recipient of the Palmetto Patriot 8 Award, given by former Lieutenant Governor André Bauer; and 9 10 Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly counts it a great 11 privilege to remember Senior Airman Nicholas J. Alden, and the 12 members with one voice offer their grateful thanks to Almighty 13 God for the service and ultimate sacrifice of this heroic son of 14 liberty. Now, therefore, 15 16 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 17 concurring: 18 19 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 20 resolution, honor and remember the supreme sacrifice made by 21 Senior Airman Nicholas J. Alden of the United States Air Force 22 while en route to a tour of military duty in Afghanistan, and 23 express to his family the deepest appreciation of a grateful State 24 and nation for his life, sacrifice, and service. 25 26 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 27 the family of Senior Airman Nicholas J.
