Sierra ASSETS Thanks You for Your Participation and Support!

“Sierra ASSETS” thanks you for your participation and support! These follow notes are from the breakout sessions with the sub-groups at our Sept 11, AB86 Summit. They are a “work-in-progress” and do not fully represent any final thoughts, plans, or policies, etc. Also know that each group is planning follow-up sessions to keep the dialogue on-going and relevant. We also anticipate more partners joining in the conversation that will build a brighter outlook as we strive for more support in serving adults in our regions through the joint efforts of the consortium; therefore our continuing set of notes will evolve. What does alignment mean for ESL? What level? Expectations for students Consistency of curriculum Defining skills in classes Outcomes Meeting student needs – time/place

How is curriculum aligned? How/by whom? LLC - Student input, prefer courses focusing in conversation TTUSD - From different programs – create your own – patchwork – based upon needs of employers for their employees. Seasonal work needs drive educational needs NUAE - Depends on enrollment/student driven, ever changing, 1 multi level class PIELL - 4 books—Paso y Paso, Laubach, Life Prints, Voyager), supplement materials from tutors PSA – textbook (Interchange), teacher aids, approved distance learning materials, EL Civics curriculum SC – Faculty input; textbooks, CATESOL, Materials modified from Los Rios, textbook list options, not text book driven – checklist helps with outcomes RAS – Side-by-Side series – EL Civics – CASAS – State Standards

Agreements on Alignments - CB 21 coding – across Community College system - PEL – NU – informal communication - SC – RAS – informal – have had an initial meeting. Problem for SC – many of their students are not from Roseville so don’t have the access to Adult School prior to enrollment in SC. If Adult Education is to be part of the sequence of courses, it needs to be in place throughout the state. - PSA – LLC sees little need for alignment, PSA wants more alignment, Informal between PSA and LLC.

Transitions: How to Students Move Out of Programs or Between Programs?

What does “seamless transition” look like? - SC – Curriculum alignment – guaranteed readiness – success for students - All--Direct movement to Sierra, to GED between all programs - All—There is support for transition through a bridge class - All—Programs are marketed. There is a clear flow chart of transition with web sites/cell contacts - NU--Outreach to less accessible areas - All—Support exists for students, PSA and RAS Counselor to help with: residency rules, legal status, financial aide, field trips, what’s at the HUB at SC, use Student Ambassadors (SC/AE/ - K-12 – (HS – CC) transition o ESL & SC academics have a cross over with ESL/basic skills

- Assessments Used : TOEFL, SC ESL (don’t self ID in ESL) which creates issues at assessment

- Accelerate in Context (AIC) – Robin Persiani is meeting w/AIC on November 14, 2014
