SITE COUNCIL MINUTES Tucson Unified School District Catalina High School School Council August 14, 2012 3:30 pm; Catalina High School Library Attended: Cindy Dunn, Kate Gallion, Mark Hanna, Rosa Lara, Carol Armstrong, Lysa Nabours, Cheryl Beran, Terri Herlein, Rex Scott; parent Denisa Encinas; student Zeljka Klipic. Call to order: 3:35 pm. Previous minutes: were approved with a change to the TAG report; the word minutes was changed to meetings.

Call to Audience: No one present. Principal’s Report: Staffing: only have one certified position left to fill and a second RTI teacher. Our Learning Support Coordinator’s position is still open. Mr. Berry and Mr. Scott are talking with Mr. Collingwood about whether to hire another RTI or to make him a 6/5 and to make better use of the tutors. Schedule/New Courses: Literature of Psychology & Philosophy taught by Schnittman and Literature of the Holocaust and War taught by Fox. These are open to juniors and seniors. RTI math is for juniors & seniors who failed AIMS math. It counts as an elective credit. Algebra 1 Retake is taught by Carol Armstrong to mostly sophomores. Research shows that Algebra 1 is the most important class in high school. Financial Math is taught by Gary Dufek. This class is being offered because this is the first year that graduates need 4 years of math. The number of sheltered classes has been doubled. Two teachers are inclusion because of the high number of IEPs (Cotter and McIntyre). Musical Theater and Vocal Music is being taught by Saldivar. Yoga is being offered by Rosa Lara. There are 3 credit recovery sections: 2 supervised by Addison and 1 by Escalada. These sections are mostly seniors. We need to make sure parents know of this so they don’t pull their kids out because they need to make up credits. Mr. Scott put it in the last newsletter of this past school year and will mention it at Open House this Thursday. Alicia Lara is offering AP Spanish Lit, Ms. Gallardo Native Speakers. Mr. Morgan is offering AP European History. Staffing: No JTED Counselor this year, instead the Federal Perkins Grant is being split between Pippen and Lawson. They will be handling the ECAPs (Education Career Action Plan) that every student needs done this year. Mary Cassidy is back to being a full time counselor working with the ELLs and reclassifieds, which comprises 40% of our students. She is paid thru Language Acquisition funding. Dr. Romero will be here ½ day every day to work with Hispanic students. Patricia Hurley was an IC at Palo Verde and will work on implementing EEI & Common Core Standards as well as model lessons. Heather and Julie are co ICs. Their role is formative, not evaluative. Mr. Scott will send something out telling everyone about these new people and their role/duties here. Facility Improvements: None except for new football field which will not be done for the first home football game. The game will be played at Tucson High. Impact Team: Meets weekly. Anyone can fill out a Student Referral Form. Student Report: Zeljka Klipic reported that some freshmen and sophomores still are not sure what they need in order to graduate. They also need help setting up a TUSDSTATS account. What is needed for graduation will be put in the newsletter and in the 4 year plan. Ms. Gallion will put a poster size one by the vocational section in the library. Zeljka wanted to talk about kids continuously disturbing classes and what can be done about it. She also was concerned about students getting all Ds yet getting to pass when they have not proven they learned anything. Mr. Scott will meet with her because Site Council does not deal with discipline issues. SCPC: No report. Mr. Scott has not been asked yet to supply the name of our rep this year. Tax credit Report: None. Trojan Advisory Group (TAG): No report. Shared Vision: No report. Misc.:  Susan Curtis and all other drop out prevention specialists’ roles have been expanded. Susan is a district employee not a Catalina employee. Susan is now handling us, 2 middle schools, 1 K-8 and 3 elementary schools. Need to take a look at her food and clothing bank and how that will be handled with Susan not here full time.  Dani Tarry and her staff are being moved to Duffy in September. We have the highest number of McKinney-Vento students in the district.  Refugee and immigrant services are now under the Pan Asian Dept. They will be housed here once Danny’s group moves.  The only 2 programs we have left are Aviation (Structures) and Terra Firma (college prep). Students that were in the Aviation Ground School when the decision was made to disband the pilot program will be allowed to finish the program. The Structures numbers are way up.  Mr. Draper’s construction numbers are way up. He has partnered with a home builder’s group and a number of trade groups.  ROTC enrollment is close to 100. Elections: Kate Gallion and Lysa Nabours were nominated for Facilitator. A paper vote was taken and Ms. Gallion will be the facilitator this school year. Cindy Dunn was re-elected Secretary. Mr. Scott read a brief description of a facilitator’s duties. The bylaws will be checked to see how parents and students are appointed to Site Council. There will be an information table set up at Open House with a sign up sheet to recruit interested parents. Agenda for next meeting: Shared Vision Continuous Improvement Plan Review Parent/Family Info Nights RTI Reading Concerns from the groups we represent Next Meeting: September 11, 2012. Meeting adjourned at 5:14 pm.
