Course Description:
Art elements and principles are used to strengthen concepts of design. Various styles of paintings, including contemporary painting are analyzed. Students experiment with a variety of techniques and materials including tempera, synthetic media, watercolor, latex, and enamels on various surfaces such as cardboard, poster board, Masonite, canvas, and cloth.
This course will focus on (but not limited to) the following topics: Principles of Art And Elements of Design, Composition, Painting Genres, Color Theory, Color Wheel, Gradated Value Scale, Tint and Shade, Linear Perspective - 1 Point, 2 Point, 3 Point, 4 Point and 5 Point Perspective, Direct Observation, Still Life, Grid/Transfer of Image, Portraiture, Figure Drawing, Painting Media, Printmaking, Photography, Textiles, Mixed Media, Cityscape, Landscapes, Imagination, Realistic, Abstract, Expression, Art History and Mural.
Essential Questions:
How does one’s History, Culture and Environment influence Art making? How can colors be utilized to express mood? How can experimenting and practicing with a variety of mediums improve art techniques? What is the correlation between Art and Science? How can it be shown in art works? What is the relationship between Art and Math? How can it be used in art works? What is the connection between Art and Language Arts? How can they support each other? What are the careers available through studying art? How can the Elements of Art and Principles of Design be used to describe the human condition? Why is art important? How is art valued? What is the value of art? How can we write about art? What is a critique? What is aesthetics?
Course Requirements:
Regular attendance, classroom participation and completion of all assignments and projects are important to the successful completion of this course. In addition, students are highly encouraged to participate in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event or VASE. This competition takes place at the beginning of the 2nd semester. Other art competitions and off campus art enrichment programs are also available.
Class Expectations:
Students will arrive to class on time. Be respectful of others, self, and property. Students will stay on task in class and participate as required. Electronic Devices will be permitted only during times indicated by instructor. Students will comply with AISD Student Code of Conduct. Class will be dismissed by instructor. Have fun. Grading Policy:
The student’s final grade for the course will be based on the following: 1st 6 Weeks 25% 4th 6 Weeks 25% 2nd 6 Weeks 25% 5th 6 Weeks 25% 3rd 6 Weeks 25% 6th 6 Weeks 25% Mid-Term Exam 25% Final Exam 25% Total: 100%/Semester
The student’s Six Weeks grades will be based on the following weighted scale: Major Grade (50%): Two per Six Weeks Based on completion of the 6 Weeks project according to the criteria and final evaluation. Minor Grade (30%): One per week, for a total of six per Six Weeks Based on weekly progress on the project and other assignments as assigned by instructor. Participation Grade (20%): One per week Based on attendance, being on time, being prepared with all materials, and maintaining Interactive Art Notebooks.
Make-up and Late Work Policy :
Late work will be accepted for three days after due date with a maximum score of 70. Make-up work, for excused absences, must be completed by the end of the week during which the student returns to school. All work, make- up and late work are due at the beginning of the class period. After three days, late work may be turned in for a grade of between zero and 50 if received no later than one week before the end of the Six Week grading period.

Open Studio:
Student will be able to work in the art room during times to be announced by the instructor.
