CONTENT

2 Know energy intake and expenditure in sports performance

Energy: measures (calories, joules, kilocalories, kilojoules); sources, eg fats, carbohydrates, proteins; measuring requirements, eg body composition, lean body mass, percentage body fat (skinfold analyses, bioelectrical impedance analysis, hydrodensitometry); body weight; calorimetry (direct, indirect)

Energy balance: basal metabolism; age; gender; climate; physical activity

ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE

P3 - Describe energy intake and expenditure in sports performance PASS P4 - Describe energy balance and its importance in relation to sports performance M1 - Explain energy intake and expenditure in sports performance MERIT M2 - Explain the importance of energy balance in relation to sports performance DISTINCTION D1 - Analyse the effects of energy balance on sports performance SCENARIO

When we exercise we use energy. Food is how we get energy into our body.

Your research so far has shown how important it is to match your Diet and energy intake to your own specific needs or energy use.

You decide to investigate how much energy you use during the day and then match your nutrition intake to match this. Whilst doing this you will start to understand the ‘Energy Balance’ and how this is affected by various factors.

Firstly you need to understand what energy intake is and what energy expenditure is:

 Energy intake and expenditure: What is Energy measured in? o Describe the terms Calorie, Joule, Kilocalorie, kilojoule Which types of food are potential fuel sources and how much energy (kcal/kj) do they provide? o Describe Fats, Carbohydrates and Proteins What do we mean by ‘Body Composition’, ‘Lean Body Mass’ and ‘Percentage of body fat’ (or Fat Mass)? Describe what ways can we measure body composition? o (skinfold analyses, bioelectrical impedance analysis, hydrodensitometry)

P3  Explain energy intake and expenditure in sports performance M1

 Energy Balance: Describe what an ‘Energy Balance’ is. What is Basal Metabolic Rate? (BMR) What things can affect the amount of energy we use? o Age, gender, climate Why do we need to take into account physical activity? P4  Explain the importance of energy balance in relation to sports performance M2

 Analyse the effects of energy balance on sports performance Why is it important to be aware of our Energy Balance? How can this affect sports performance? What happens if there is a negative or positive energy intake? In what situations would someone want to have a positive/negative energy intake? D1

Grading criteria: P3, P4, M1, M2, D1
