Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: check documentation and confirm requirements for the job are available; demonstrate knowledge of the use of signature/section and spine marks to meet the job requirements; set up a collator/gatherer and an adhesive binding machine in accordance with workplace practices, and operate a collator/gatherer/adhesive binding machine in accordance with workplace practices.

Critical health and Unit 340, Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices in safety prerequisites the print industry, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
Explanatory notes
1 All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and its subsequent amendments.
2 Definitions job documentation refers to the documentation that is used in the workplace that contains the instructions and requirements for a particular production job. This may include but is not limited to – workplace orders, production orders, workplace specifications, samples, lay cards; job requirements refer to specific requirements for the job at hand. These requirements may or may not be covered in the job documentation and may include special instructions, quality requirements expected by the customer, and/or production standards as set down by the workplace; workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or workplace.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Check documentation and confirm requirements for the job are available.
Evidence requirements
1.1 Job documentation is checked to ensure that all specifications for the process being undertaken are complete and any discrepancies are reported in accordance with workplace practices.
1.2 Components required for the job are checked against the job documentation and their availability confirmed.
1.3 Availability of equipment, as determined by the job documentation, is confirmed.
1.4 Sample copies are hand assembled to meet the job requirements.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of the use of signature/section and spine marks to meet the job requirements.
Evidence requirements
2.1 Demonstration includes use of signature/section marks to ensure that correct sequences are achieved.
2.2 Demonstration includes use of spine marks to ensure that correct sequences are achieved.
Outcome 3
Set up a collator/gatherer in accordance with workplace practices.
Range includes jobs of at least four sections and cover.
Evidence requirements
3.1 Collator/gatherer is set up to meet job requirements and hoppers are timed to collating chain.
3.2 Auxiliary equipment is set up to meet the job requirements.
Range may include but is not limited to – cover folder feeder, reply card attachments, tippers.
3.3 Crew assisting on collator/gatherer is supervised.

Outcome 4
Set up an adhesive binding machine in accordance with workplace practices.
Range two of – notchbound, perfect bound, poly urethane resin (PUR) bound, sewn; jobs must include adhesive binding of at least four sections and cover.
Evidence requirements
4.1 Factors to be considered in selecting adhesives are described.
Range includes - substrate, flexibility, temperature, working time, viscosity, machine or hand application, strength, acidity, speed of drying; may include, a minimum of two of – life, humidity, acidity, previous printing processes, compataility to substrate and production process.
4.2 Milling and roughing knives are set as required to suit the substrate and the job requirements.
4.3 Adhesives suitable for the substrate and job requirements are selected and used.
4.4 Adhesive reservoir is checked for temperature, and pre-melt tank is operational.
4.5 Spine and side glue rollers are set to meet the job requirements.
4.6 Reverse spinner roller is set to remove excess glue.
4.7 Cover feeder, including creasing unit are set to meet the job requirements.
4.8 Cover nipping unit are set.
4.9 Clamps (jaws) are set to suit the thickness of the job.
4.10 Delivery belt is set to meet requirements for speed and product thickness.
Outcome 5
Operate a collator/gatherer/adhesive binding machine in accordance with workplace practices.

Evidence requirements
5.1 Collator/gatherer/adhesive binder is operated to meet job requirements.
Range production speed, required quality, safety.
5.2 Crew assisting on equipment is supervised.
5.3 Jobs are prepared for forwarding to the next process to meet job requirements.
Range knocked up, stacked, spines square, 3-knife trimmer requirements.
5.4 Adhesive binder is cleaned.
5.5 Waste control procedures are followed.
Range recyclable waste, non-recyclable waste, security waste.
