Reading Lesson: Poetry Grade Level: 3

Lesson Summary: Students will identify elements of poetry and write their own poems. Students will review the selection, noting elements of rhyme and rhythm. Students will then work in groups to write and illustrate a poem of their own. Advanced learners will write their own poem. Struggling learners will read a poem of their choice.

Lesson Objectives:

The students will know that…  that poetry is a form of literature.

The students will be able to…  identify elements of poetry and create their own poems.

Learning Styles Targeted:

Visual Auditory Kinesthetic/Tactile

Pre-Assessment: 1) Read a poem out loud to the class and then post it on the board.

2) Ask students to identify elements of the poem.

3) Explain that poems usually rhyme and tell a story or describes something.

Whole-Class Instruction

Materials Needed: “Aunt Ida”*, paper, pencils or pens, and drawing materials

Procedure: Presentation: 1) Distribute copies of “Aunt Ida”* to the class.

2) Explain that “Aunt Ida” is a poem and that the class is going to read and study the poem.

Guided Practice: 3) Have students read “Aunt Ida” aloud.

4) Ask students to identify elements in the poem, such as rhythm and rhyme.

Independent Practice: 5) Have students work in pairs and think of a topic they would like to write about.

6) Have each pair write a poem about the topic of their choice.

7) Encourage students to illustrate their poems.

Closing Activity: 8) Have students share their work with the class.

9) Invite students to compile their poems into a class poetry book.

Advanced Learner

Materials Needed: paper and pencils or pens

Procedure: 1) Ask students to write a poem or write the words to a song.

2) Allow students to share their work with the class or add it to the class poetry book.

Struggling Learner

Materials Needed: books

Procedure: 1) Ask students to choose a favorite poem, either from a book at home or a book in the classroom.

2) Have students read their chosen poem aloud to the class. *see supplemental resources
