Under a maxiflex schedule, a full-time employee has a basic work requirement of 80 hours for the biweekly pay period but may vary the number of hours worked on a given workday or the number of hours each week within the limits established by the Forest Service unit.

Travel is required .

Transfer of station benefits for existing federal employees are allowed per FSH 6509.33.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is located in the beautiful Upper Great Lakes Region of the Midwest and Wisconsin's Northwoods, covering over a million and a half acres. The Chequamegon side of the forest covers about 858,400 acres in Ashland, Bayfield, Sawyer, Price, Taylor, and Vilas counties while the Nicolet side covers nearly 661,400 acres in Florence, Forest, Langlade, Oconto, Oneida, and Vilas counties.

Renowned for its four seasons of natural beauty, it is home to a diverse array of northern hardwoods, pines, and meadows. It is bountiful with lakes, rivers, and streams. Areas of highlands overlook the surrounding landscapes.

The Wisconsin Northwoods have been the destination of recreationists and vacationers for over a century, with its abundant opportunities for fishing, biking, hunting, camping, hiking, skiing, boating, birding, and cultural resource sights and attractions. Located 300-450 miles north of Chicago, the Northwoods weather is characterized by generally pleasant summers of warm days and cool nights, perfect for enjoying the abundant lakes, camping sites, canoeing and kayaking rivers. The fall season is generally cool and dominated by great panoramas of color. The winters generally offer plentiful snowfalls, cold temperatures, and great opportunities to frequently snowshoe, ski, and snowmobile.

Medford is the county seat of Taylor County located in north central Wisconsin. The city is known as the industrial hub of the area with strong industrial and manufacturing sectors with a population of 4,260.

Park Falls known as the “Ruffed Grouse Capital of the World” is located on the Flambeau River in the Northern highland of Wisconsin; 400 miles north of Chicago, 207 miles northeast of Minneapolis, and 50 miles south of Lake Superior.

The city began in the late 1800s as a small river village called Muskellunge Falls, but was later renamed Park Falls for the scenic beauty surrounding the former falls on the south side of town. With a pulp and paper mill, the town grew rapidly and officially became a city in 1912. The number of people living in Park Falls today is approximately 2,700.

The Park Falls community is divided by the North Fork of the Flambeau River – a popular destination for fishing, canoeing and whitewater rafting. The surrounding area also boasts over a million acres of public lands providing numerous opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast to camp, hike, fish, hunt, trap, atv, swim, snowmobile, snowshoe, and cross country ski.

The community provides other amenities for living and raising a family. State of the art health care is provided through the Marshfield Clinic and Flambeau Hospital. Educational opportunities abound with the Chequamegon School District (K-12), St. Anthony’s Catholic School (grades K-8), and vocational opportunities through North Central Technical College. Quaint shops, grocery stores, and a movie theater are also available.

Surrounded by forest, the city of Washburn nestles on the shore of Lake Superior's historic Chequamegon Bay in northernmost Wisconsin. Washburn hosts a variety of options for outdoor enthusiasts. A full menu of streams, inland lakes, and Lake Superior provide a banquet of choices to those that love fishing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking. The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest provides hundreds of miles of trails for lovers of the outdoors. Washburn's proximity to the Apostle Islands allows for a quick getaway to one of our nation's most pristine treasures.

Also located on the District is Mt. Valhalla Recreation Area. The area offers trails for snowmobiles, cross-country skiing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback and ATV riding. Valhalla has a chalet with fire pit and tables for large groups or family gatherings.

Washburn is nestled between Ashland to the south and Bayfield to the north. Ashland is the home of the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, and Bayfield is the jumping off point for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center features a regional History Center and Archives, gift shop, art gallery, theater, and a five-story observation tower offering a panoramic view of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands Region.
