Zach Price –Brighton Center Mobile Farmers Market Manager With Molly Saks-Community Garden VISTA

 Increasing access to food sources in food deserts is the goal of the community garden project and mobile farmers markets.  Farmers Markets in Boone, Campbell and Kenton County will expand their produce perks programs through SNAP and WIC programs. Produce perks matches dollar for dollar spent on produce purchases.  Surveys have revealed that low income individuals have low access to fresh produce and healthy foods. o 1/3 of individuals surveyed eat one vegetable per day, which is well below the recommended portion per day. o Of those surveyed there largest request was access to fresh foods; natural foods came in 2nd; and 40% would like more access to organic foods.  Population and Goals: o Seniors o Expand access to 5 high need areas in the community. o Provide on-site cooking demonstrations. o Make the produce affordable to all by offering the use of SNAP/EBT/WIC benefits as well as offering produce perks at local farmers markets.

 How the programs are supported: o The production garden sells fresh produce to several local markets and restaurants. The profits from these sales are used to purchase seeds, soil, compost, and other tools needed to support the community gardens.

 Community Gardens: o 250- 4x8 raised beds in 4 locations currently, and will be adding 5 more this season. o 2 production gardens-CCDU Production Garden at Newport Detention Center and the other located at Holy Spirit-Rose Mission o Ann Street Garden has 72 individuals from the west end of Newport harvesting their own garden plot; there are 24 community beds. o First planting will be April 2nd; there will be 3 season planting this year. o Volunteer opportunities are available to mentor, weed, and plant flowers. o Freestore Foodbank is working with farmers markets in Covington on a mobile market project.
