IN THE STUDENT SENATE OF

GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY

September 15th, 2011

A Resolution to Define Service to the Senate

Be it resolved that the Student Senate of George Mason University-

Whereas, 2 CSG Chapter 3 says Senators shall not be absent from Service to the Senate;

Whereas, Service to the Senate is undefined in the Code of Student Governance; and

Whereas, The Senate has the right to interpret the statutes that affect it; therefore, be it

Resolved, That, starting September 19, 2011, the following is defined as Service to the Senate for the remainder of the 32nd Student Senate:

Service to the Senate Section 1: Meetings Each Senator shall attend weekly full meetings of the Senate and at least one committee meeting per week.

Section 2: Office Hour(s) Each Senator shall complete at least one office hour in the Student Government Office. Failure to complete an office hour shall result in ½ unexcused absence.

Section 3: Mandatory Events The following are mandatory events for Student Government that will count as two unexcused absences should a Senator fail to receive permission to miss the event: Student Government Retreats (One in the Fall and one in the Winter) Night Walk (October/November) Witch Watch (Late October/Early November) One Homecoming Week Event (Late January/Early February) Mason Day Shift (Late Spring Semester) The Speaker and Speaker Pro Tempore may add to the list of mandatory events if and only if at least 4 weeks notice has been given.

Section 4: Outreach Hours Every Senator shall complete at least 5 outreach hours each semester. An outreach hour is when a Senator spends time actively gauging student opinions. Examples of outreach hours include, but are not limited to- What Do You Want Wednesdays and Kiosking in the JC.
