When Wayne was a senior, his track coach persuaded him 30 to concentrate only on running because of his natural ability. 31 During his single competitive running season in high school, 32 Wayne finished third in the state of Virginia in cross country and 33 broke the state record for the indoor and outdoor twomile race. His 34 impressive performances garnered the attention of numerous 35 college head coaches, and Clemson University was the young 36 athlete’s choice for his academic and athletic college career; and 37 38 Whereas, during his undergraduate years (19781981), Wayne 39 Coffman was a Clemson track and field studentathlete. As his 40 undergraduate career wound to a close, the school created a 41 women’s track and field program. In 14 1997, therefore, he joined Clemson’s Vickery Hall staff as an 15 athletic academic advisor. During his career, he has worked with 16 studentathletes from almost every sport on campus and has sought 17 to ensure that all of them stay on a path to graduation. Proof of his 18 success: Clemson studentathletes have finished in the top ten 19 nationally in graduation rates four years running; and 20 21 Whereas, recently, Wayne Coffman, who still bleeds orange, was 22 named to the Clemson Hall of Fame for his contributions as an 23 athlete and coach; and 24 25 Whereas, on the home front, Wayne is the proud husband of 26 Miriam Coffman and the equally proud father of two children, 27 Chelcee and Chandler; and 28 29 Whereas, the House of Representatives is grateful for the legacy of 30 leadership Wayne Coffman has bestowed on this great State and 31 appreciates the long and enduring guidance he has given its 32 citizens. The members take great pleasure in wishing him well as 33 he enters retirement and trust he will find much enjoyment in the 34 more leisurely pace of the days ahead. Now, therefore, 35 36 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 37 38 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 39 by this resolution, recognize and honor Wayne Coffman, Clemson 40 University director of football academic services, for his thirty 41 years of service to the people of South Carolina, congratulate him 42 upon the occasion of his retirement, and wish him continued 43 success and happiness in all his future endeavors.
