Different committee members will be in charge of different tabs to update if needed. The guide will be updated after the monthly meeting. The committee will rely on people using the guide if anything may be wrong on the guide, please let someone on the committee know so it can be updated. The committee will not change anything on the guide until it is verified. Kris is going to work on the format so it can print better. If some agencies cannot use google docs, they will try to make it more user friendly. A suggestion was made to send updates to the representatives of each tab, so they can verify. 5. New business i. Since we are continuing asset, Nikki will look into emailing Jean and Deb for more information. iv. City of Ames funding- Deb Schildroth wanted to make sure this was not miscommunicated. This is in a fund from local option sales tax, but it does fund other agencies. This is funded through ASSET. If anyone is interested, feel free to look into it. Human Services is part of the quality of life component of these funds so ASSET is where the Human Services policy goes. It is just not Human Services though; it is the whole quality of life for the community. An idea would be to invite the new city person to help us understand this better. (from city manager’s office) v. Treasurer position for SCHSC- No one volunteered as of yet. Nikki will email others to see if they will come forward. There are some new ISU classes available for interpretation services. There are new classes through ISU people can take, they will be non-certified. It is only Spanish at this point.

vi. BACA Presentation BACA stands for Bikers Against Child Abuse. It was founded by John Paul “Chief” Lilly. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Registered Play Therapist. Explained the back patch- Black is the dark times the child goes through White- The innocence of children Red- The blood spilled of innocent children Fist- We are against child abuse Skull and crossbones- The death of child abuse This organization is100% volunteer. No one gets paid including the attorney. All members go through a state and local background check. There are chapters throughout the United States. It takes around 2 years to earn the back patch. It is a very precise process to make sure they are worthy. They have to be willing to be a tool in the fight against child abuse; a tool for empowering kids. BACA consists of people from all walks of life. Our big thing is to empower the kids. They do not babysit, they are not therapists, but they will help to find one and work with their counselors. They are not here to apprehend anyone; they are here for the children. 1 in 3 girls and 1in 4 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18. Most of them were molested as a child. 1/3 of these children will later abuse their own children. They go to the child’s home. The whole biker chapter goes and they become part of their family. They will stand all around the child to make sure they stay safe. They become their friends and earn their trust. Once they establish that trust they can empower the children and give them confidence that they can be and feel safe. It is the child’s right to be happy. BACA goes to court with them and stand by them through that process to help the children discover just how powerful they can be, You cannot friend these kids on Facebook for safety reasons but BACA stays in touch through texts and their families Facebook. These are the levels of BACA: Level 1 intervention- the welcoming, the children get a patch and pick their road name. The whole chapter shows up. They ask the child if they want a hug or fist bumps and help the child learn everyone’s road names. All the rest of the bikers in the chapter know this child has been hurt. Level 2- BACA will live in the child’s front yard literally camping there while the police look for the abuser. There was one case where the BACA bikers lived in this child’s front yard for 39 days until the perp was caught and to make that child feel safe. Bikers will go to court with these kids and give them the confidence and a BACA coin to fidget with and again to help them with their confidence. They do not do physical confrontation. They use people in the community to pass along BACAs information to help. They follow up with the kids. They keep in touch and talk about their day but not about the case. They give out teddy bears full of BACA hugs. They tell the kids, when the hugs run out then they will come back and fill it with more hugs. There is an agency liaison to contact the child and assists in finding an agency to help the child and the agency matches the child to a BACA representative. They can take away the child’s fear and receive continuous training to do so. They go through a mental health professional to help these kids. They use fund raising to defray the costs of the program. There is no cost to anyone. BACA has a Christmas party every year and they ask the kids what they want. Then they go shopping and get them what they want. With BACA’s involvement there has been a significant difference in helping Marshalltown, Storm Lake, Cedar Rapids and many other places in Iowa. If the perpetrator is in the family, they cannot take that case. vii. City of Ames funding Update viii. Treasurer Volunteer – Nikki asked for volunteers for the treasurer’s position.
