G30 Set Piece Routine

S 001 Set Piece Drill ; Defenders and attackers roles and set piece play.

Requirements: Half a pitch all players goalkeeper all soccer balls.

General Scenario: Players set up as shown, with four defenders inside the penalty area. Two strikers are also in the area and have only two touch roles. As the coach calls a number, that move is made. I.E. No. 1 a corner kick from left side, No. 2 a corner kick from right as shown. The Coach calls numbers quickly as soon as defenders have cleared the ball or strikers have shot for goal. Pressure is the name of the game.

Play commences: When the coach calls a number.

Roles: Defenders To clear the ball away from goal or to allow goalkeeper to get the ball.

Attacking players Strikers to get a shot on goal, attack the incoming ball.

Targets: Defenders To clear their lines under pressure and to organise quickly on each call.

Attacking players To work set moves on each call. i.e. short corner, long corner etc.

Coaching Points On No. 3 make players wait until the whistle blows BEFORE they can take the kick, this will allow the defenders to set up a wall.

If you have more players then let them come into play from behind the goal to form a defensive wall and let the for defenders in play take up other defensive positions.

Developments i. Let players have set pieces ready to use on each call.

ii. Allow a midfielder to pick up any crumbs by shooting for goal once only on any poor clearances.

iii. Put an extra striker in the penalty box.

iv. Put an extra Free Kick on the right side of the pitch (deep or wide) call this No. 4

v. Put extra midfielders into the routine.
