Knight, Horne, Murphy and Harrell 10 Document Path: l:\council\bills\gm\24914ahb12.docx 11 12 Introduced in the House on February 8, 2012 13 Adopted by the House on February 8, 2012 14 15 Summary: Coach John McKissick 16 17 18 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 19 20 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 21 2/8/2012 House Introduced and adopted ( House Journalpage 9) 22 23 24 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 25 26 2/8/2012 27 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR COACH JOHN MCKISSICK 12 FOR AN AMAZING CAREER SPANNING SIXTY YEARS AS 13 HEAD FOOTBALL COACH AT SUMMERVILLE HIGH 14 SCHOOL, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR BEING 15 NAMED THE 2012 DON SHULA NFL HIGH SCHOOL 16 COACH OF THE YEAR. 17 18 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 19 Representatives are pleased to learn that Summerville High School 20 Coach John McKissick was awarded the prestigious Don Shula 21 NFL High School Coach of the Year Award in Indianapolis on 22 Friday, February 3, 2012; and 23 24 Whereas, at 85 years old and with five hundred ninetyfour career 25 victories, Coach McKissick is the winningest football coach at any 26 level, and he was presented the award by the 83yearold Don Shula, 27 the winningest coach in NFL history; and 28 29 Whereas, created in 2010, the Shula Award honors exemplary high 30 school football coaches who display the integrity, achievement, 31 and leadership demonstrated by Coach Shula; and 32 33 Whereas, the award included a $10,000 cash award for Coach 34 McKissick and a $15,000 grant for the Green Wave football 35 program, and two days after he received the award, he attended his 36 first Super Bowl football game in Indianapolis; and 37 38 Whereas, Coach McKissick just completed his sixtieth season at 39 Summerville High School, during which he has led the Green 40 Wave football team to thirtythree regional titles and ten state 41 championship titles; and 42

[4747] 2 1 Whereas, having won numerous state and national coaching 2 honors, he was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of 3 Fame in 1982 and the National High School Sports Hall of Fame 4 in Kansas City in 1990; and 5 6 Whereas, in 1986, Governor Carroll Campbell awarded Coach 7 McKissick the Order of the Palmetto, the highest award conferred 8 on civilians by the State of South Carolina, and he was named to 9 the South Carolina Hall of Fame in 2005; and 10 11 Whereas, during his sixtyyear tenure that has lasted through twelve 12 United States presidents, four presidents: Jimmy Carter, Ronald 13 Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush, sent him letters of 14 congratulations or commendation during their presidencies; and 15 16 Whereas, he has long maintained that awards and honors result 17 from being surrounded by good people who are working for a 18 common cause, and he feels he has been blessed both to work with 19 great people and to work for Summerville High School; and 20 21 Whereas, in the words of Coach McKissick, “Life is tough. Life is 22 football without a helmet,” so he has prepared generations of 23 Green Wave football players to meet life head on and to be 24 successful both on and off the gridiron; and 25 26 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 27 Representatives are grateful for the pride and recognition that 28 Coach McKissick has brought to Summerville High School and to 29 the Palmetto State, and look to hear of his continued successes in 30 the years ahead. Now, therefore, 31 32 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 33 34 That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of 35 South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Coach 36 John McKissick for an amazing career spanning sixty years as 37 head football coach at Summerville High School, and congratulate 38 him for being named the 2012 Don Shula NFL High School Coach 39 of the Year. 40 41 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 42 Coach John McKissick. 43 XX
