Classroom Rules and Grading Procedure

Jonathan Blake Shaw – Physical Science Classroom Rules and Grading Procedures 2015-2016 Classroom Rules

1. Obey all school rules. 2. Be respectful to others and their property. 3. Be in your seat when the bell rings. 4. Bring all necessary books and materials to class. 5. No food or drink in class.

Consequences for Breaking Classroom Rules

1st time – Verbal Warning 2nd time – Break Detention 3rd time – Afterschool detention or office referral An office referral will be written for severe 1st time offenses. Detention will be assigned at my convenience regardless of your after school commitments.

Classroom Procedures

1. Enter the classroom quietly. Once you are in the classroom you will sit down in your seat and quietly answer the bell ringer.

2. You may choose your seat. However, Mr. Shaw can and will assign individual students to sit in a specific seat. Mr. Shaw may also put the entire class in a seating chart. Once everyone has chosen his/her seat, a seating chart will be made. At this point, no one will change seats without permission. You have two weeks from August 10th to select your assigned seat.

3. You must be in the room before the bell rings or else you are tardy and will spend the remainder of class in ISD. If you are late, you may be allowed in class but will be assigned break detention.

4. Pencils will be sharpened before class begins or after I have made your assignment.

5. Group work will be assigned on a random basis. Group size and members will vary depending on the activity.

6. NO BAGS ALLOWED IN CLASS. This includes all athletic duffle bags, backpacks, and purses. Bags should be stored in your locker.

7. Cheating: ACADEMIC DISHONESTY WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! Zeros will be given on all work to all parties involved if cheating has occurred.

8. Make-up work: Students will have three days to complete any make-up work. After three days a grade of zero will be assigned. It is your responsibility to ask your teacher for your work as well as to schedule a time to take missed quizzes and tests. Please check with a classmate and/or Mr. Shaw’s website for makeup assignments.

9. The teacher will dismiss the class, not the bell. Class will not be dismissed until everyone is quite, desks are in order, and the area around your desk is clean. I will not write you a pass to your next class if you are late.

10. Cellphones will be put away during class. a. You may use your cellphone ONLY when given permission which will be NEVER…so don’t ask. i. Do not use your phone at the end of class. ii. Do not use your phone when you have completed your classwork. iii. Failure to follow this procedure will result in confiscation of your phone and/or an office referral. 1. This is your first and last warning, so do not use your phone for any reason unless given permission.

11. Bathroom use, errands, office trips, and personal business: Take care of these things before or after class or during break. No exceptions.

Grades Students will keep a notebook of all required materials. Notebooks will be graded the day before or the day after a test. The contents of your notebook must be kept in a specific order. The order of your notebook will be posted on the class website. Please keep up with your notebook, it’s an easy grade!

Notebooks will contain the following items:  Classroom Rules and Grading Procedure Handout (This handout)  All notes taken in class  Handouts  Other assignments done in class such as worksheets, study guides, etc…  Any other work deemed notebook worthy Jonathan Blake Shaw – Physical Science

If you are absent and miss notes, it is your responsibility to make sure you have those notes in your notebook. An excused absence will not exclude you from not having notes in your notebook. To get missed work, please do the following: 1st Ask a friend for missed notes and information. 2nd Check the Physical Science website for missed handouts, notes, etc… 3rd As a last resort, ask Mr. Shaw for missed info, assignments, etc…

1. Late notebooks will be accepted. A notebook is considered late if it is not checked on the day it is due. The penalty for a late notebook is 1 point/day.

2. Penalty for having notebook content in the wrong order: 1 point.

Grading policy: A. Tests & Projects 50% B. Notebook 10% C. Labs, Group Work & Classwork 10% D. Quizzes 30% TOTAL 100%

Technology and BYOD Students who own an electronic communication device (ECD) are encouraged to bring them to class. However, ECDs are not always conducive to student learning. Therefore, all devices should be turned off OR on silent and stored according to the Calhoun County Student Handbook.

Permission must be given to every student on a daily basis in order to use his/her ECD. Failure to ask permission to use an ECD is a rule violation. 1st offence during a class period – confiscation of phone and/or an office referral.

Important Things To Consider: A. Students who use a tablet or notebook computer for the purposes of note taking may use their device on a daily basis. However, if a student abuses this privilege, device use will not be allowed. B. Rarely, if ever, you will use your phone, tablet, or computer in this class. If an assignment requires the use of your device, you will be told well in advance of the assignment so that you may plan to bring your technology to class. C. You will keep your phone in your pocket or locker during this class. a. You will not be allowed to have your phone out during class. b. You will not be allowed to use your phone anytime during the class unless an activity requires the use of your phone. c. You will not be allowed to have your phone sitting on your desk during class. d. You will not be allowed to charge your device during this class. e. Failure to follow any of the above rules will result in the confiscation of your phone and/or an office referral. You have been warned.
