1 Ministering Unto The LORD Teacher Outline

I. Introduction: A. Psalm 63:1-8 B. The Lord must be the center of our life C. Host the Holy Ghost - Rom. 12:13 1. Host - given to hospitality II. What Does "To Minister" Mean: A. Ministering is waiting ? two definitions 1. Wait for 2. Wait on B. Scriptures that talk about waiting 1. Romans 12:7 2. Is. 40:31 - (Key verse throughout lesson) a) When you study this scripture both meanings apply 3. Part of ministering is sometimes literally waiting, just waiting; setting in is presence C. Our ministering unto the Lord is more like waiting on or serving 1. Jesus said in Matt. 20:28 ?I come not to be served but to serve a) KJV says, ministered to and minister, "serve" is the original word 2. Serve comes from the Greek word diakonos or diakoneo, where we get the word "deacon". It also means "attendant" or "relief" D. John 12:26 also talks about serving E. The Lord should be our focus; not praying prayers, (but during this time with the Lord He may lead you to pray) III. Examples found in the Bible of Ministering to the Lord: A. Deut. 10:8 (The Lord separated the tribe of Levi) B. 1 Sam. 2:18, 3:1 (Samuel was a boy) C. 2 Chr. 5:11-14 (Temple of Solomon) D. Luke 1:46-55 (Mary the mother of Jesus) E. Luke 2:36-38 (Anna the prophetess) F. Acts 13:1-3 (The leaders of the early church ministered to the Lord corp.) IV. Man Was Created For: A. Fellowship - Gen. 3:8 1. Relationship - a relationship is birthed out of fellowship 2. Scriptures a) Col. 1:16-17 b) Acts 17:28 c) Rev. 4:11 3. (John 14:6) - No one can come to the Father but by Jesus E. Man was created to praise and worship God ? Is. 43:7,21 F. Why do we love Him, (1 John 4:19, because He first loved us) D. The greatest commandment - Mk. 12:30 1. This means with all of our whole being, spirit, soul, and body

ISOM – International School of Ministry

2 E. God did not save us to help Him win the world, but He does use man to carry out His plan for it 1. 2 Cor. 5:18-19, the Bible says we are ministers of reconciliation 2. Because Adam sinned fellowship was broken a) Only way we can get back into fellowship with God is through our belief, acceptance, and confession of Jesus Christ, Vs. 20 b) Rom. 6:22 - "But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life"

F. Works or Worship 1. So many Christians are going about doing so much work for God, (in service for Him), that they neglect time with Him 2. The Lord is not seeking workers but He seeks worshipers a) Those that will worship Him in spirit and in truth - John 4:23-24 b) Vs. 24 of John 4 says, "God is Spirit and those who worship Him must truly worship in spirit and truth." (1) In order to effectively worship God in Spirit and in truth, we need the supernatural enabling called the baptism with the Holy Spirit. (2) When we are filled with the Holy Spirit we are given a supernatural language from God. Human words are too limited. They cannot express or contain the flood of worship that comes up through the soul. c) (1 Sam. 12:24) says, "Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great thing He hath done for you." d) Truth - not just a put on "spiritual act", not just going through the motions, it must be real. (1) Christianity is not a man-made religion. It is a real relationship, a fellowship with the LORD. (2) Truth does not exist apart from the Person of Jesus Christ, who is the truth (John 4:16), "I AM the truth, the way and the life." (3) The Holy Spirit is known as the "Spirit of Truth" (John 16:13); and He abides in every believer. So He will lead you in all truths. 3. Only after that love relationship has been established and we center upon Him, can the Lord safely send us out to work with Him. a) We must be about our Fathers business, but our first ministry is to Him (1) So many people have been so busy doing good things that they are kept from God's best for them. What you are doing may be a really good idea, but is it a God idea. (2) Always doing good things may keep you from doing Great things. A good example of this is found in Luke 10:38-42. Jesus did not rebuke Martha's serving but her over concern and anxious preoccupation with "things" more than with God. G. A Relationship 1. Getting saved is not just a one time thing a) The act itself is ? accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, but salvation is more than getting saved, genuine salvation is an ongoing relationship b) Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship. You made Jesus a part of

ISOM – International School of Ministry

3 your life, now you must make a choice on a daily bases to include Him in you life. 1. What kind of relationships would you have if you ignored the people you said you care about or love? a) Try to remember when you first fell in love (1) Didn't you want to spend every moment with that person? (2) How can you get to know someone if you do not spend time with them? b) Read Rev. 2:4-5, 3:16 (1) Notice Jesus said YOU left your first love (2) (Heb. 13:5) the Lord said, ?I WILL NEVER LEAVE THEE, NOR FORSAKE THEE.? (3) We get so busy with life, we forget the Life Giver 3. Read Rom. 12:1- "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service". a) The word "therefore" means there is something Paul said before that explains the reason we are to present our bodies as a living sacrifice. Look at the previous verse Rom. 11:36, "For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be the glory forever", Amen. b) We are not our own, we have been bought with a price, (1 Cor. 6:19-20). 4. When Paul was in Athens he saw an altar inscribed "TO THE UNKNOWN GOD" and told the people just who this unknown God they worshiped was, read Acts 17:24-31 V. Why Is It Important To First Spend Time With The Lord: A. Jesus was able to minister because He spent time with the Father 1. John 5:19 2. John 15:5 - Without Him we can do nothing B. If you study the scriptures you find there were three things involved in Jesus' ministry, Matt. 4:23, 9:35. 1. Teaching 2. Preaching 3. Healing C. Many scriptures in the Bible talk about Jesus withdrawing Himself away to be alone with God. 1. He got away by Himself in order that He could hear what the Father was saying. 2. A quote from Frank Laubach taken out of the book "Practicing His Presence" - "this year I have started out to live all my waking moments in conscious listening to the inner voice, asking without ceasing, 'What, Father, do you desire said? What, Father, do you desire this minute?'" It is clear that this is exactly what Jesus was doing all day every day. 3. This is how Jesus could raise Lazarus from the dead, John 11:40-44, (41 key verse) a) We know that He did these things by the power of the Holy Spirit (just as we do today) but He had to get His orders from the Father, He had to learn. (1) He said I do what I see the Father do, John 5:19-21

ISOM – International School of Ministry

4 b) You may never raise someone from the dead, but you can pray for a sick friend c) You may not be called to preach before thousands but you could teach a class of 3 yr. olds that Jesus loves them D. You will never be able to effectively minister to others if you do not first take the time to minister to Him 1. As we minister to Him He will turn and minister to us, which causes a life-flow to be established a) He fills us up so we can give out to others b) Our ministry to others comes from the overflow 2. When we spend time with Him we receive a) Fresh anointing b) Power 3. If we don?t have it in us, we sure can?t give it to others E. Those who spend time in His presence will leave with 1. A strong sense of love and forgiveness for others 2. Compassion for the lost 3. Purpose to obey God F. He gives you instructions for your day 1. We need to get orders from Headquarters daily 2. Allow the Lord to change our agendas G. Visions and dreams are birthed as you minister unto the Lord 1. Give the Lord the first part of every day 2. It is best to set aside time each morning while you are fresh and not tired 3. The time of day is not as important as making time 4. Example: a) Mothers with small children may find it better when they are napping b) Your morning may begin at night (those who work at night) c) You may already have a favorite time when you meet with the Lord H. Setting aside time each day may not be easy. It may sometimes be a sacrifice 1. A sacrifice is not a sacrifice until it costs us something a) 2 Sam. 24:24 I. We not only need to give the Lord the first part of our day we also need to give Him the first part of our week and the first part of all that we have 1. Heb. 10:25 2. Mal. 3:10-12 J. After the first time the Lord shows up, you will make time, not just try to find time to fit Him in your daily schedule because 1. The time you spend waiting on Him becomes very precious 2. You realize without Him you cannot accomplish the things He has asks you to do VI. How Important Is It: A. God thinks it is so important we minister to Him that in Rev. 4:6-9 says, four angelic beings do nothing else 1. What an awesome assignment, seeing different facets of God a) A "facet" - aspect; a surface of a cut gem (diamond for example 2. We are not given this same duty, but the Bible does say we are to

ISOM – International School of Ministry

5 a) Praise and Worship Him (Ps. 149, 150 etc.) b) To serve Him (Ps. 100:2) c) To Love Him with all of our hearts, souls and mind (Mk. 12:30) B. To do this we must get to know Him, and the only way to know Him is by spending time with Him C. It is very easy to get caught up in the wonderful feeling of being in God's presence, but we need to come down from the mountain top 1. Some people stay there, they have no time for the people they are called to serve 2. They become too "Heavenly minded to be any earthly good" 3. We are to get filled up so we can reach out and minister to the world, Acts 1:8 4. God wants to establish an outflow of life as well as an inflow a) We are not merely to receive life, but to become vessels so He can impart life by the Holy Spirit through us to others VII. Priority The Bible Places On It: A. We are the Church. The reason the Church exists is: 1. First - to minister to the Lord 2. Second - to minister to the saints 3. Third - to minister to the world B. The Church began at Pentecost. That is when the Holy Spirit birthed the Church. Since the very beginning of creation the Holy Spirit has been involved when something is birthed. Three examples of this are: 1. In Gen. 1:2, "And the Spirit of God moved (was hovering over) the face of the waters." 2. When the angel of the Lord came to Mary, Luke 1:34-35. The angel told her she was to have a son. She said to the angel, "How shall this be, seeing I am a virgin?" Vs. 35, and the angel answered and said unto her, "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee:" 3. We see where the Church was birthed on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4. The Holy Spirit came as a rushing mighty wind. a) What were the 120 people doing in the upper room? The Bible says they were all in one accord (purpose of mind) (1) The first thing I believe they were doing was waiting (ministering) unto the Lord, which is the first reason the Church exists (a) After they ministered to the Lord, the Holy Spirit ministered to them. I am sure as He poured out His Spirit upon them they began praising the Lord and prophesying, (Prophecy is for edification, exhortation, and comfort, 1 Cor. 14:3) so, (2) The second thing they were doing was ministering to one another (the saints) - the second reason the Church exists. (3) The third thing they did was to minister to the world - the third reason the Church exists. (a) Acts 2:5 says, there were men from every nation (women also, we know where there are men there are usually women) was in Jerusalem at that time. (b) Peter stood up and preached to them; ministered to them (the world) and about three thousand people got saved that

6 day, (Vs. 41). 4. Do you want to be effective in your ministry; do you want to make a difference? Ministering to the Lord first is the only way, because He is the source; He is the power, the life force in which we must draw from. VIII. Ways Of Ministering Unto The Lord: A. There are many ways in which believers can minister to (or serve) the Lord. We can minister to Him by: 1. Presenting Him with our tithes and offerings. The first tenth of all blessings & fruit of our labors, (Mal. 3:10-12) 2. We can minister to Him by ministering to those who He loves, (Matt. 25:40). B. But I want to look at 3 primary ways - praise, worship, and communion. These are three very different things 1. Praise - Heb. 13:15 tells us to, "offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name." a) Ps. 54:6, "I will freely sacrifice to you, I will praise your name, O LORD, for it is good." b) Praise involves responding to God for what He has done, what He is doing or what He is going to do. c) The word "praise" comes from many different Hebrew roots. d) Seven Hebrew words for praise: (these are all found in Psalms) (1) YADAH - Ps. 134:2 to throw out hands; to worship with extended hands (2) TOWDAH - Yadah is its root - to extend the hands in adoration and thanksgiving. Ps. 100:4 says "Enter into His gates with thanksgiving," the word for thanksgiving there is TOWDAH (3) HALAL - root word for hallelujah, meaning to shine, boast, celebrate foolishly (Ps. 111:1, 112:1, 113:1, 116:19, 149:1&9, 150:1&6) says, Hallelujah, it is the Hebrew word used for "PRAISE THE LORD" in Ps. 111, 112, & 113:1. Hallelujah is the same in every language of the world. (4) TEHILLAH - means to sing hallelujahs, to celebrate with song, Ps. 100:2 - "Come before His presence with singing." Vs. 4 - "come into His courts with praise." (5) SHABACH - to address in a loud tone, shout, Ps. 100:1, "Make a joyful noise unto the LORD", in Hebrew it means to "shout joyfully". (6) BARAK - to bow down in a worshipful attitude, Ps. 95:6 (1) ZAMAR - to play instruments, Ps. 150:3-5 e) We can thank, praise and adore human beings, as well as God; but we are not to worship any human being, because only God is worthy of worship f) As Psalm 100 says, we are to enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise, but if we truly want to get next to Him, to be invited right up in His lap, we must know how to Worship Him. 2. Worship a) Involves us giving something to God, not Him giving to us. b) When we worship, we come seeking Him, not for what He can do for us but just to exalt Him.

ISOM – International School of Ministry

7 c) First time we see worship in the Bible is in Gen. 22:1-5, (Key verse is 5) - "Stay here with the donkey; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship." d) Other examples of worship: (1) Matt. 2:11 - The Wise Men brought gifts (2) The gift we bring is our self (Rom. 12:1) (a) When we sacrifice something it means it first must die. We must die to our flesh, (Paul said I die daily, 1 Cor. 15:31, Gal. 5:24) (b) The Lord will always accept our gift because we are His inheritance. We belong to Him, Eph. 1:11-12; this verse can also be read as, "by whom we were also made an inheritance".  Eph. 1:16-18, 1Cor. 3:23 (c) The Bible says that our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit, (1 Cor. 3:16-17; 6:19). You know what occurred in the temple - praise and worship.  When David brought up the Ark he appointed those that would praise & worship God continually, day and night.  It was the priests' duty to sacrifice unto God. The Bible says through Jesus we have become kings and priests unto God, (1 Pet. 2:9; Rev. 1:6, 5:10). Read 1 Pet. 2:5,9  The Bible says when the sacrifices were burnt it was a sweet savor (sweet fragrance) unto the Lord (Ex. 29:18-25). (d) Another example of worship is found in John 12:3 - Mary anointed the feet of Jesus with costly oil. The house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.  2 Cor. 2:15 - "For we are unto God a sweet savor fragrance of Christ"  God created all of our senses, and sweet smells can play a part in our worship of Him 3. Communion a) The definition is to talk over, to speak with anyone, to be in company, to associate with b) God had Moses build a tabernacle in the wilderness. (1) The outer court was where the people would bring their sacrifices. This is where we offer our body as a living sacrifice. Only the priest could go into the inner court, the Holy Place (Ex. 25-31, 35-40) (a) The Table for the Showbread, the Gold Lampstand and the Altar of Incense were located in the Holy Place. (b) The Altar of Incense symbolized daily prayer to God (2) Then there was a Veil before you entered the Holy of Holies or the Most Holy place where the Ark of the Covenant was placed. This is where God's presence dwelt. When we commune with God this is where we go. Beyond the Altar of Incense, past the Veil, we enter the Holy of Holies where His Presence is. But today, God ISOM – International School of Ministry

8 does not dwell in temples made with hands, (Acts 7:48). He dwells in us, every believer (John 14:17,23). c) When we commune with God it involves more then our minds; it involves our spirits (1) When we are born again our spirit is renewed, old things pass away and behold all things become new (2 Cor. 5:17). (a) God puts a new spirit in us, and that is how He communions with us; through our spirit-man (2) Something happens while we commune with the Lord. An exchange takes place (a) We exchange our weakness for His strength, Is. 40:31  As we minister unto the Lord our strength will be renewed. "They that wait (communion is a part of waiting on the Lord), they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength"  Other translations say, will find new strength (NLT), shall change & renew, (AMP)  Exchange is a better translation of this passage. It is the Hebrew word chalaph meaning "to change"  (Ps. 62:5), "My soul, wait thou only upon God." 4. When we minister to the Lord with our praises, worship, and communion we just move from one into the other - it all flows together. It moves us right before the throne of God Almighty. His presence then moves into us in a way in which we FEEL it. a) You can actually feel His presence. Some say it is the anointing upon us 5. When we are born again (receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior) the Spirit of the Living God comes to live inside us. a) (Rom. 8:15-16) says, "For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, (love casts out all fear 1 John 4:18), but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." Vs. 16 the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God," 6. What loving Father is not thrilled when his children come to him just to say, "I love you"? Compare this to a child that comes only when he/she needs or wants something. a) Our relationship should be closer with the Lord than with our earthly fathers. b) We need to get to the place where we go to our Father daily just to tell Him how much we love Him. (1) Then when we truly have a need we can ask in Jesus' name knowing it will be taken care of because; (a) Of our relationship, the fellowship we have with Him (b) His Word tells us that He will do it (Mk. 11:23-24) (2) He knows what we need before we even ask (Matt. 6). (3) Sometimes what we need is impossible with our earthly father but nothing is impossible with God (Mk. 10:27, Luke 1:37) (4) If we continue to run to Him only when we have a need or are in trouble, pretty soon He will tell us to grow up ? think about it, read the Bible! ISOM – International School of Ministry

9 (5) It may be difficult to relate with Father God if you had never had a good relationship with an earthly father IX. What Happens As We Minister To The Lord: (Tell some examples of what you have experienced) A. His presence will fill the place 1. When praises go up, Glory comes down, (read 2 Chr. 5:2-14) a) Worship brings us into God's presence and brings God's presence into us, (Ps. 22:3 says, He inhabits the praises of His people. b) While you are praising Him He comes. Every time you speak or even just whisper His name He is there. B. Sometimes when you really want the Lord to show up, nothing happens, and sometimes when you are not expecting Him, He comes. 1. For example: a) While you are ministering to Him you do not feel His presence, it seems He is so far away. You go on about your daily business and all of a sudden, you feel His presence so strongly all around you. He was there all the time but did not manifest His presence. b) He is always with us, (Heb. 3:5b, He will never ever leave us) C. There are times if you listen very carefully and have your spirit in-tune, you can hear the angels singing as you are praising and worshiping Him. 1. I invite the angels to join me while I am praising and worshiping Him D. You may see a cloud or mist. Some call it the "Glory Cloud," believe it is the Holy Spirit hovering E. You will experience the Lord in ways you never have before. 1. He will reveal things about Himself that He will not at any other time. a) He will only show you certain things about Himself when all your attention is focused on Him, (remember the angelic creatures in Rev. 4:8) b) He may even manifest His presence to you F. You may catch glimpses of His glory (a bright light in your midst) G. Sometimes you may even smell Him, (Eph. 5:2). 1. He smells like walking in a flower garden with the combined fragrance of every flower I have ever seen or know about. It is the most beautiful and sweetest smell. It is truly indescribable. H. You may even be caught up in the spirit as Paul, John or some of the other disciples were. X. Some Results: A. Sometimes worship culminates in revelation, though normally revelation leads to worship. 1. What do you do when God shows you something and gives you understanding about it (revelation)? You praise Him, thank Him, and worship Him right? 2. Sometimes it is not until we are worshipping Him that He will give us the answer to something we have asked about, or have been pondering in our hearts. B. There is a power in praise and worship that pushes back the satanic and releases the Divine. Satan is powerless when we are praising and worshipping the Lord C. We should enter into the presence of the Lord with a repentant heart and as we do so we will receive times of refreshing and joy, (Acts 3:19, Ps. 16:11; 21:6) D. We have looked at Is. 40:31 and it says, our strength will be renewed ISOM – International School of Ministry

10 E. You will never be the same again ? it is life changing XI. Scriptures About "Seeking The Lord", "Calling Upon The Lord" & "Drawing Near": A. We basically choose how much of God we want in our lives. God is more than eager to draw as close to us as we will let Him B. Let us read some scriptures about "Seeking The Lord, Calling Upon Him, and Drawing Near To Him" (read all or choose some) 1. 1 Chr. 28:9, 20 2. 2 Chr. 15:2 3. Ps. 91:15; 145:18 4. Is. 55:6; 58:9 5. Jer. 29:12-13; 33:3 6. Jas. 4:8 XII. What Does It Take: A. What does it take to have a deep and constant awareness of Christ? 1. It depends upon how much time and effort we are willing to put into this relationship B. Train your spirit 1. We have to train our spirit to be sensitive. a) The more time you spend with Him the more sensitive your spirit becomes b) The quicker you recognize His voice C. Endeavor seeking to know nothing but Christ 1. Paul was speaking to the Corinthians in 1 Cor. 2:1-2 "And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, (I came) declaring unto you the testimony of God; Vs. 2, For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." 2. Phil. 3:10,12 - Paul said, "That I may know Him" Vs. 12, "Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus." a) A quote from Nelsons KJV Study Bible about these scriptures - "at this point in his life the apostle does know Christ, but not to the full extent possible. He has experienced His power, but not to the degree he desires. He has been made like Jesus in His death, but he can die still more to sin and self. He does "walk in newness of life," but there is room for improvement. Unlike the perfectionists who claim to be sinless in this life, Paul admits that he is not. If the Chief of the Apostles does not feel he has "arrived" spiritually, then neither should we". D. Quick to obey 1. It takes being quick to obey when the Holy Spirit impresses upon us to do something or not to do something. 2. If we ignore the leading of the Spirit and just go about our life always doing what we want to do, and never asking or waiting to get an answer, then our hearts will become harden and it will be harder to hear 3. 1 Thess. 5:19 says, ?Do not quench the Spirit.? We quench Him by not listening and obeying XIII. Entering: When We Come Into His Presence A. Come with a repentant heart ISOM – International School of Ministry

11 1. If you think you can enter into His presence and still live in sin, you are deceived a) We are to walk humbly with our God, knowing it is by Jesus' righteousness that we can enter into His presence, (Is. 64:6, Rom. 3:10,22,25) 2. God is a Holy God a) (1 Cor. 1:29) - ?no flesh shall glory in His presence b) Ezek. 44:15-18 ? ?sweat? represents flesh B. Come with a submissive and teachable spirit 1. Rom 10:3 2. Jas. 4:7 3. 2 Tim. 2:2 4. John 14:26 C. Come with thanksgiving and praise 1. Ps. 100:4 2. Eph. 5:20 3. 1 Thess. 5:18 D. Come with an attitude of praise and worship (read all or choose some) 1. Ps. 95:1-3; 96:1-9; 145:1-3; 146:1-2; 147:1; 148:1-5; 149:1- 5; 150 E. The Lord wants to be with us more then we can ever know. He created us to fellowship with Him. We can never love Him too much, nor spend too much time with Him. Only if we minister to Him first can we become the person He has destined us to be. F. God is restoring to His Church this truth; that our 1st ministry is to the Lord. Our ministry to the Lord will never end. Heaven is all about Him not us! 1. Rev. 5:11-14 2. (Rev. 22:3) says, there is a throne of God and of the Lamb; and His servants shall serve Him. 3. We will be serving the Lord for ?eternity? (something that endures beyond all time). 4. The time we spend ministering unto the Lord here on earth is just preparation for eternity XIV. Practice: A. This class is not about Him ministering to us, it is about: 1. Waiting on Him 2. Seeking His face 3. Pleasing Him 4. Letting Him know how very much we love Him B. But, remember as you minister unto the Lord, He will also minister to you. He knows what each one of us need this very moment 1. Some may need to be saved 2. Some may need cleansed, or delivered 3. Some may need to be restored 4. Some may need healing in your body 5. Some may just need to be refreshed and refilled C. Start with praise and worship and follow (flow with) the Holy Spirit
