Continuing Professional Education

in Physical Therapy at UIC

ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Illinois at Chicago is committed to providing high quality, evidence-based continuing education courses for physical therapists. The Department encourages practicing professionals to think of UIC as a resource for information about current research, physical therapy practice, and educational opportunities. Expert instructors are continuously involved in teaching graduate-level courses as well as continuing education workshops. These courses and workshops are held on UIC's campus right in the heart of Chicago, an ideal and exciting setting in which to learn from and work with colleagues in the field of physical therapy.

Coming this Spring...

POST-PROFESSIONAL ACADEMIC COURSEWORK: PT 562 - Neural Plasticity and Pathophysiology January 12 – April 27, 2005 Wednesdays, 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm 3 graduate credit hours/45 continuing education hours Instructor: T. George Hornby, PT, PHD

The purpose of this course is to study the evidence of and the mechanism underlying neural plasticity during the adaptation of the vertebrate sensorimotor system, with an emphasis on the role of motor learning in the rehabilitation of individuals following neurological injury.

T. George Hornby is an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Illinois at Chicago and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. Dr. Hornby received his PhD in Physiological Sciences at the University of Arizona and his PT degree at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed postdoctoral work at Northwestern University studying the mechanisms of weakness and involuntary spasms following neurological injury. His current research interests are the physiological mechanisms underlying the loss of strength and walking ability following stroke and spinal cord injury. Dr. Hornby is particularly interested in how specific physical and pharmacological interventions can enhance the rate of recovery of motor performance. Dr. Hornby has presented his research findings in the recovery of locomotion following stroke and spinal cord injury using robotic and manual assisted gait training strategies at local and national conferences.
