EXTENDED SERVICES UPDATE

Motivating the Middle Years An inspirational skills festival at Princes Hall on 23 rd and 24 th June

First Partnership, Rushmoor Schools Plus and Rushmoor Education Improvement Partnership are working together to organise a skills festival for 1,200 local school children aged 10 – 12 to meet the best businesses, organisations and professional bodies in the area. The skills festival aims to inspire and motivate our Year 6 and 7 children by giving them an opportunity to experience different industries and job roles via hands-on interactive workstations.

Do you work for an inspirational company? Are you passionate about the work you do? Then call us about running a motivational station at this unique event. Each station will be visited by 10 students at a time for a 20 minute session in which you will be able to talk about what you and your company does and run a 10 minute hands-on activity. This session will then be repeated during the day, 6 times in the morning and 6 times in the afternoon.

We will provide lunch and refreshments, an opportunity to network with other local and inspirational companies and your organisation will appear in an accompanying programme distributed to every child, teacher and organisation attending the event.

To get involved and raise the aspirations of our future workforce, please contact Jane Sheridan or Heather Wheeler at First Partnership by 26th May. Tel: 01252 852471 Email: [email protected] or [email protected]

Hampshire Interfaith Network – Calendar Competition

A competition is now underway in which children and young people from Hampshire schools are invited to produce a drawing, painting, poem, photo or a mixture of those to represent a religious event in any given month of the calendar year. Winners and Runner-ups will be selected and used to produce the Interfaith Calendar 2011.

The name of the entrant, their age, school and school year needs to be provided with the entry. Please provide details of both the young person and older person.

Winning schools will each be awarded £50 whereas each winning student/group will be rewarded £30 worth of bookshop vouchers. The launch of the Interfaith Calendar 2011 will be in October where all winning and runner-up schools and entrants will be invited.

The British Gurkhas Welfare Society (BGWS) was founded in 2004 by ex British Army Gurkha soldiers to help Gurkhas fight for their rights and more importantly settle and integrate in the UK. As the first and largest Gurkha society officially and legally established in the UK, there are over three thousand heads of families who are members of the society. Members are spread all over the UK with the bulk located in Hampshire, Kent and London areas. The Rushmoor area has a large and growing Gurkha community.

The BGWS headquarters is based in a building in Farnborough, known as the ‘Gurkha Bhawan’. BGWS has always encouraged Gurkhas to take part in community activities, work closely with various local departments and to become part of the local community. The ‘Gurkha Bhawan’ has now become a beacon of light for Gurkhas coming into the UK requiring advice and help as well as for the local departments in ensuring that the needs of the local community in understanding each other are met.

Town Twinning - Under 12s Football

They may not be the England team but a group of young Rushmoor footballers also need our support when they kick-off in Germany on 23-24 May. Under 12s from Farnborough Athletic FC are due to be playing in a major youth football tournament in Rushmoor’s German twin town of Oberursel taking on fellow young talent from Germany, France, Russia and Holland.

Any Rushmoor football club that would like to participate in the tournament next year should contact the Twinning Association at [email protected]

****************************** Aldershot CAB moves across the road!

If you are wondering what has happened to Aldershot CAB, we are still here! In February we moved across the road to 35-39 High Street (the old Visitor Centre building next to Marks and Spencer). The building has been completely refurbished, with carefully chosen colours to help promote a calm and productive atmosphere, where advisers and clients can work together to find ways to resolve sometimes very complex problems. All telephone numbers remain the same, with 0845 120 3765 for the advice line. To take advantage of our High Street presence, the bureau is now also opening on a Saturday morning, as well as throughout the week. For full details of our opening hours visit www.rushmoorcab.org.uk

****************************** Siblings Support Group

Alternate Saturdays, 10 – 12 noon at Farnborough Grange Infant School. £3 per term per child (term time only).

Are you caring for a child/young person with a disability in Rushmoor or Hart? Do they have a sibling who does not have a disability? Are they aged 5 – 11 years? Then this group may be just what they need! It is a social group that offers space and time for children to play together who have similar life experiences. The children will have a say in what activities take place and will have the support of experienced play workers.

Interested? Contact Tracy Clement [email protected] or ring 0784 134 0442. ****************************** Every Child a Talker (ECaT) - Rushmoor pilot. Parents wanted!

11 A child’s ability to develop language depends on being immersed in a rich environment of words, sounds, rhythm, and verbal and non-verbal expression from birth. The Hampshire County Council Early Education and Childcare Unit (EECU) has been given government funding for a year to support a pilot project for under fives in Rushmoor called Every Child a Talker (ECaT).

We have identified an Early Language Lead Practitioner in 20 early years and childcare settings, including childminders. These settings will be working closely with two Early Language Consultants to develop the communication skills of all the children in their setting.

In line with the National Strategies for Early Years, a key focus of the pilot will be working with parents, to help develop an understanding of the importance of early language development and communication in the home. We want to hear from parents about what really matters to you about your child’s speech and communication. We are especially keen for parents of disabled children or those with English as an additional language to tell us of their experiences of communication.

If you have a child under school age you can express interest in becoming involved via your nursery, pre-school or childminder if they are involved in the project. Useful information for parents:

****************************** Do it for them – they’re worth it

‘Do it for them – they’re worth it’ is the message from Rushmoor Borough Council’s latest campaign to encourage residents in Aldershot and Farnborough to stop smoking for their children and loved ones. The Council, along with support from the NHS Hampshire stop smoking service Quit4Life, will be setting up information stalls at events, supermarkets and shopping centres over the next couple of months offering free, professional advice and support.

Every smoker who comes to a ‘Do it for them – they’re worth it’ stand and signs up to a local, personal one-to-one session, will be offered a free leisure activity for themselves or their family and they will be entered into a daily prize draw to win shopping vouchers. There is also the added bonus of more vouchers as a “well done” once they have quit for 28 days – but only if they sign up to quit at a Rushmoor stand.

During half term, stands will be available at the Farnborough Donkey Derby at King George V Playing Fields on Monday 31st May, at Farnborough Leisure Centre on Tuesday June 3rd, and at HomeStart in Mayfield Community Centre on Monday June 7th.

For more information contact Carla Dale at Rushmoor Borough Council, tel. 01252 398 807.

****************************** VOLUNTEERING

The Farnborough congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) is looking for a service project to undertake on Saturday 18th September. We would anticipate around 100 volunteers turning up on the day of which approximately 70% will be adults and 30% will be children. We would aim to start around 10:00 and finish around 16:00 - times can be flexible. We will provide all of the man power but not the materials, although people will be willing to bring the appropriate tools if they have them. We will provide light refreshments for the volunteers and a project manager with assistants who, if needed, will coordinate the day.

In the past we have undertaken work at schools, respite centres and clearing woodland. Such activities have included full decoration inside and out of the various buildings, making paths and gardens etc.

If you feel that in any way we can help on this set day in September we will be very pleased to do so. Should you need any more details please contact Joel Matthews 07825 999 026 or email [email protected]
