Model How to Add 24+32. Guide Students to Understanding That When Adding, We Move Down

Unit: 2 Renzoni Week: 10 Day: 1 Monday 10-17-16 Domain: Number and Operations in Base Ten Suggested time/duration: 60 minutes Standard: MAFS.2.NBT.2.5 Learning Target(s): Fluently add and subtract within 100 using  add and subtract two 2-digit numbers (within 100) efficiently and accurately strategies based on place value, properties of (fluently), using a variety of strategies. operations, and/or the relationship between addition  apply knowledge of place value and the properties of operations to explain why and subtraction. addition or subtraction strategies work. MAFS.2.NBT.2.9  justify and explain the chosen strategy . Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations. Rigor: Procedural Skill and Fluency SMP(s): 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision Materials/Resources: 100 Chart (or 120 chart), CPALMS Lesson “Adding and Subtracting on a Hundred Chart ”, CPALMS Guided Practice, Lakeshore Daily Practice Journal p.23 Friday Engage: Roll to 100 CCSS: 2.NBT.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100.

Materials: 2-4 players place value mats

6, 20, or 30-sided dice

Base ten materials – units (1), longs (10), flats (100)

Directions

1. Roll die and the highest number goes first.

2. You play in turn by rolling the die and taking the appropriate amount of units, longs, flats, etc.(a ten rod and 9 units)

3. You continue and make appropriate exchanges as needed. 4. The winner is the first to reach the targeted number: 100

Variations: Start with 10, 100 or 1 000 and subtract the roll.

Grades 4+ may race to 10 000+ or use decimal numbers. www.Mrs-Robbins.com Explain: Introduce the CPALMS lesson “Adding and Subtracting on a Hundred Chart” Follow the “Teaching Phase” from the lesson.  Model how to add 24+32. Guide students to understanding that when adding, we move down the columns for tens and forward in rows for ones.  Also practice subtraction with the following example: 71-26. Guide students to understanding when subtracting, we move up columns for subtracting tens and we move back in rows for subtracting ones.  Guide discussion on the similarities and differences with adding and subtracting, continue addition practice where students have to move down to the next row when adding or up to the row when subtracting.

Explore: Centers:  M: Students will pair up in their groups and use addition and subtraction flashcards. Students will also explain how they got their answers.  A: Students will work on Lakeshore Daily Practice, Tic Tac Toe Addition, Falling into Addition Coloring, Scarecrow Coloring. (Pick and choose if this is too much.)  T: Students will practice this week’s standards on MobyMax and Prodigy.  H: Students will explore standards through manipulatives and games: Red Riding Task Card Game, Addition and Subtraction board games, Grab and Add.

Elaborate: What makes a number a friendly (benchmark) number? (It is easy to use, such as having 0 ones or is a commonly known fact.) What does it mean to decompose numbers? Why do we decompose numbers? (Break apart numbers. Usually, we do this to make a problem easier to solve.) Why is it easier to do this way? Can you do this without the Hundreds Chart? Why would it work without the Hundreds Chart? (Yes, because our place value system is also based on ten.)

Evaluate: Informal Observation Options for remediation/extension: Extension: Guide students to close their eyes and visualize a 100 chart. Have students practice adding and subtracting using a 100 chart mentally. Also, see the extension game found at the bottom of the CPALMS lesson. Remediation: Complete the independent practice activity from the CPALMS lesson with homogeneous groups.

An anchor chart will be made along with this lesson. (May have been completed last week.)  You may add strategies that students use to the chart. If students do not use a number line to help solve the equation, ask if there is a way to solve the problem using a number line. Record.  Make sure to add using a number line as a strategy on the anchor chart. Explore: Centers:  M: Students will pair up in their groups and use addition and subtraction flashcards.
