1. Learners: a. Grade: 6/7 b. Age: 9-12 c. Number: 10-12 d. Gym Clothing: school clothes, tennis shoes e. # & Length of Lessons: 8x60 minute lessons
2. Facilities: Gymnasium
3. Equipment: 6 frisbees, cones, pinnies
4. Materials: pencils, rule quizzes, class rules poster Initial Skill Ability & Knowledge of Learners
Skill Theme (Throw/catch): According to Graham et al. (2004), “Some elementary grade children are at the control level…a few children involved in certain youth sports programs are at the…utilization level. This is true only for their sport….As children get older, the gap between the skill levels widens. Children in the fourth and fifth grades who are involved in youth sports programs are often at the utilization level in the skill themes used in their sport, but not necessarily in other skills. In the same class, however, it’s not uncommon to have children who have remained at the pre-control level, primarily because of their lack of activity beyond formally organized physical education classes….Rarely are elementary school children at the proficiency level in a skill. We observe them, but they’re certainly in a minority. In almost every instance, their proficiency is a result of their extensive involvement in after- school youth sports programs” (p. 102-103). In specific regard to activities that involve throwing and catching, “It is important that the teacher be certain that children can throw and catch before progressing to the utilization and proficiency levels” (p. 472). In order to be successful in ultimate frisbee, students will need to be at the utilization level of throwing & catching a medium size frisbee. According to Byra et al. (1995) students at the utilization level should be able to throw for accuracy, catch to throw quickly, and demonstrate correct technique for a sidearm throw and catching above the waist (skills needed in ultimate frisbee). Movement Concept (Invasion Game): According to Mitchell et al. (2003) “early invasion game experiences should be of the throw-catch variety because this type of game incorporates manipulation skills students are able to perform” (p.20). To play an invasion game students must be able to keep possession of the ball and attempt to penetrate the opposing team’s defense and attack the goal. Previous curricula reveal that many of these students have engaged in invasion game units (e.g. soccer, floor hockey) and specifically end-zone invasion games (e.g. tag rugby). Personal & Social Responsibility : Previous curricula reveal that students have demonstrated following rules and procedures and participating safely in physical education classes appropriate to the specific content being delivered. The Tactical Games approach will provide an opportunity for students to work in persisting teams for the duration of the unit. Students will be expected to participate and develop social skills such as trust and co-operation and exhibit sportsmanship behaviors aligned with the etiquette of sport. Ultimate Frisbee Grade 6/7 3

Simple Rules of Ultimate Frisbee 1. The Field -- A rectangular shape with endzones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40 yards, with endzones 25 yards deep. (We will use a 25 yd by 15yd field with end zones 8yds deep)
2. Initiate Play -- Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team (we will work with 5v5)
3. Scoring -- Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's endzone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.
4. Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count.
5. Change of possession -- When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc from that point and becomes the offense.
6. Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
8. Fouls -- When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone. Ultimate Frisbee Grade 6/7 6 Psychomotor Task Analysis

Triangle Passing In groups of 3 15 or 20 consecutive passes Q: Where do your passes have to go so that your team and catching Do not move with the disc can keep the ball? Use of backhand and forehand passes A. To a teammate’s hands Q:Which pass is easier backhand or forehand? Why? A. Backhand because it makes the disc fly flatter Q: When are forehand passes better? A. When you have to make a short pass quickly.
Pass and move In groups of 3 15 or 20 consecutive passes Quickly make a backhand pass when receiver is far After pass move to a different spot in home away court Forearm pass when receiver close Ultimate Frisbee Grade 6/7 13 Use of overarm and chest passes Q: Where do your passes have to go so that your team can keep the disc? A: Signal clearly with hands out. Q: Where should you look when you are making the pass A. At the receiver’s lead hand
2v1 Keep ball After completion of first pass can cut to Make 4 passes in a row, Q: How did you keep the disc? create another passing lane then switch defender A: By keeping passes short and accurate. Make four consecutive passes in a small Q: Which side should you pass from? area A; From your free side (the side away from the No overhead passes defender) to the player signaling for the ball. Q: What can the disc carrier do to maintain possession when under pressure from the defender? A: Keep pivoting away from the defender Q: What should you do after making a pass? A: Cut to create another passing lane Ultimate Frisbee Grade 6/7 14 Pass and Move Triad Three passes Forward End lines 15 yds apart Receiver lead with the hand held out as a target No defenders Pass accurately ahead of the receiver Start at one endline and make at least 3 Cut quickly forward after pass passes to get the disc over the opposite end line Q: What should you do after you have passed the ball? Clearing out Home base area (5 players) Make four passes then rotate Players B and C go to a different side with short quick Player A (out-of-bounds) must get the disc cut to player B or C. Players D and E (the Fake one way and move the other defenders) begins by facing B and C and If no passing lane created attacking receivers make tries to guard them or block the pass longer cut and change positions After making a short cut the attackers “clear Player A pass as soon as passing lane is open A D E B C out” and switch positions Q: When attacking the endzone is there less or more space to get open? A: Less Q: How can we create space in the endzone to receive the pass A: After making an unsuccessful cut, clear out the area and move to a different area of the endzone Q: When should you the disc carrier make the pass? A: As soon as a passing lane opens Ultimate Frisbee Grade 6/7 15 Game Tasks Organization Criteria to move on Teacher skill cues 3v3 (or 3v2) Use of warm defense (arm’s length) Four passes in a row is one Possession Game Use a backhand pass from the out-of- point bounds line that is out-of-bounds Can take one (pivot) step with ball As soon as disc drops to ground change of possession

Practice Task Organization Criteria to move on Teacher skill cues 2v2 end zone Home base area First team to make 5 Stay with your player game 2v2 with offensive team trying to score by points Feet staggered, knees bent making a pass into the opponents end zone Back to your own goal Man-to-man defense See your player and ball at all times
Q: What is it called when you get close to an opponent? A. Guarding Q: Where should you stand to guard your opponent A. Between your opponent and your own goal (set up demonstration of this) where you can see both your opponent and the ball Q: What should you do when your opponent gets the ball? A. Get closer to them Q: What should you do when your opponent gets closer to the end zone? A. Get closer to him and try and intercept the pass. Q: How should you stand? Why? A.
