JOB DESCRIPTION

Role Title: Senior Youth Worker Location: 6 Westgate Street, Hackney London, E8 3RN

Reports To: Joint Chief Executive Salary: £25,708-£26,716 per annum, pro rata

Context: London Gypsy and Traveller Unit (LGTU) is a well established charity since 1981. The organisation grew out of work managed by Save the Children until LGTU became independent in 1998. The board of trustees includes Travellers, supporters and interested professionals. The project has developed over the years in response to changing needs. Currently we have a team of 11 staff who mostly work part-time.

Our Purpose We support Gypsies and Travellers living in London to influence decisions affecting their lives; to improve their quality of life and the opportunities available to them and to challenge the discrimination they routinely experience. In partnership with the community, LGTU uses its experience and expertise to contribute to the development of local, regional and national policy. Our work over the past 30 years has been possible because London Gypsies and Travellers trust LGTU to listen to their concerns and respond appropriately for the long term.

Job Purpose:

 To supervise Youth workers, volunteers and youth work programme to fulfil LGTU aims and objectives.  To assess the needs of the young people, and planning and delivering programmes related to those needs.  To work directly with young Gypsies and Travellers.  To ensure that good practise is shared and all aspects of the work are supervised, supported and promoted

JOB DESCRIPTION

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. To co-ordinate all youth workers team meetings. 2. To plan, implement and evaluate the youth work programme to include personal development, citizenship and life skills. 3. To work directly with young people aged 8 -19 years, to enable their personal development and social education, by co-ordinating the provision of a range of positive activities. 4. To manage the risk assessment process for group work activities, including ensuring compliance of premises, with health and safety guidance. 5. To work as part of a team acting as a leader and/or participant as

required. 6. Produce outcome-focused reports, demonstrating the impact and benefits to young people in relation to funding outcomes. 7. To organise a summer programme. 8. Be responsible for managing the Jack Petchey Award Scheme. 9. To organise inductions of new workers. 10. To explore the possibility of partnership working with local youth agencies and projects to deliver exciting and engaging projects with young Travellers 11. To explore discrete funding opportunities in Hackney, Haringey and Tower Hamlets. 12. To ensure that Travellers are included in local youth initiatives. 13. To make relationships and develop trust with the young people. 14. Input into the yearly Operational Plan. 15. Contribute to the website and other public profile resources. 16. To take responsibility for vehicle maintenance, insurance, etc. 17. To fulfil central office procedures and admin tasks arising from the work. 18. To ensure work is developed within the bounds of professional good practice. 19. Liaise effectively with a range of people across the local community, including statutory and voluntary sectors. 20. To take reasonable care of your own health and safety and other who may be affected by your work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Experience of management skills, is advantageous but not essential including staff supervision, programme co-ordination, resource management, and knowledge of personnel systems. Professional youth work qualification is essential. 2. Demonstrable knowledge, skills and experience in youth and group work. 3. Experience of working with young people from diverse backgrounds and with challenging needs. 4. Experience of countering discrimination and working with hard to reach young people. 5. To be aware of and adhere to policies and procedures. 6. Ability to be part of and contribute to, the project team in terms of planning, implementation and evaluation of programs of work; and to the broad aims and objectives. 7. Good communication skills, both written and oral, with a wide range of people. Good basic IT and administrative skills and the ability to write reports and keep accessible records. 8. Ability to drive a minibus and be in possession of a clean driving licence. 9. To have three years driving experience 10. Commitment to work within an Equalities & Diversity Framework.
