The governors are seeking to appoint an excellent class teacher to join our friendly, enthusiastic team. We are looking for a teacher who has experience of raising the attainment of pupils who are working below national expectations.

JOB DESCRIPTION

POST TITLE: CLASS TEACHER

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP To the Head Teacher

JOB PURPOSE: To carry out the duties of a teacher set out in the statutory conditions of employment for teachers as defined in the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document

This job description is not a comprehensive definition of the post. Discussions will take place on a regular basis to clarify individual responsibilities within the general framework and character of the post as identified below.

In drawing up this job description the Governors and the Head Teacher jointly acknowledge their responsibility, in ways defined for Head Teachers in their Conditions of Employment, to enable the holder of each post to carry out the assigned duties and responsibilities.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

PART 1: You are required to carry out the duties of a teacher set out in the statutory conditions of employment for teachers as defined in the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document. The post requires you to teach pupils in the primary age range.

PART 2: You are required to carry out such particular duties which form part of the Professional Duties as the Head Teacher may reasonably direct from time to time. Working days are to be specified by your employer or by the Head Teacher.

Professional Duties -Teaching:

1. In each case having regard to the curriculum for the school, and with a view to promoting the development of the abilities and aptitudes of the pupils in any class or group assigned to you;

2. Planning and preparing courses and lessons;

3. Teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to you, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupil in school and elsewhere;

4. Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils;

5. Acting as a role model with regard to the implementation of the school’s safeguarding children policy

6. Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to you;

7. Providing guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers, including information about sources of more expert advice on specific questions; making relevant records and reports;

8. Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils;

9. Communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils;

10. Communicating and co-operating with persons or bodies outside the school; and

11. Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above;

Assessments and reports:

12. Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils;

Performance Management:

13. Participating in arrangements made in accordance with regulations for the appraisal of your performance and, when agreed, that of other teachers;

Review, induction, further training and development:

14. Reviewing from time to time your methods of teaching and programmes of work;

15. Participating in arrangements for further training and professional development as a teacher including undertaking training and professional development which aim to meet needs identified in appraisal objectives or in appraisal statements;

16. In the case of a teacher serving an induction period pursuant to the Induction Regulations, participating in arrangements for your supervision and training;

Educational methods:

17. Advising and co-operating with the head teacher and other teachers (or any one or more of them) on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements;

Discipline, health and safety:

18. Maintaining good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are authorised to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere;

Staff meetings:

19. Participating in meetings at the school which relate to the curriculum for the school or the administration or organisation of the school, including pastoral arrangements;

20. Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations / tests and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations / tests and recording and reporting such assessments;

Management:

21. Contributing to the selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers and non-teaching staff, including the induction and assessment of new teachers and teachers serving induction periods pursuant to the Induction Regulations.

22. Assisting the head teacher or an assessor in carrying out threshold assessments of other teachers for whom you have management responsibility;

23. Co-ordinating or managing the work of other staff; and

24. Taking such part as may be required of you in the review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school;

Administration:

25. Participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to such duties as are described above, including the direction or supervision of persons providing support for the teachers in the school; and

26. Attending assemblies, registering the attendance of pupils and supervising pupils, whether these duties are to be performed before, during or after school sessions.

27. There is no requirement for a teacher routinely to undertake tasks of a clerical or administrative nature, which do not call for the exercise of a teacher’s professional skills and judgment.

Management time:

28. A teacher with leadership or management responsibilities shall be entitled, so far as is reasonably practicable, to a reasonable amount of time during school sessions for the purpose of discharging those responsibilities.

29. Preparation, Planning and Performance Time:

30. The teacher will be entitled to be released from 10% of their teaching timetable in order that they may carry out those activities required to prepare, plan and assess pupils’ work.

Working time:

31. The provisions of this paragraph shall not apply to deputy head teachers, assistant head teachers, advanced skills teachers, fast track teachers or to teachers employed to teach part-time

32. A teacher employed full-time shall be available for work for 195 days in any school year (1265 hours), of which 190 days shall be days on which they may be required to teach pupils in addition to carrying out other duties

33. Such a teacher shall not be required under their contract as a teacher to undertake midday supervision, and shall be allowed break of reasonable length

34. Such a teacher shall work such reasonable additional hours as may be needed to enable them to discharge effectively their professional duties.

35. This job description may be reviewed at the end of the academic year or earlier if necessary. In addition it may be amended at any time after consultation with you the post holder.

36. To safeguard and promote the welfare of children for whom you have responsibility or come into contact with, to include adhering to all specified procedures.

37. This post has a high level of contact with, and responsibility for children.

38. The post holder must carry out his/her duties with full regard to the Council’s Equal Opportunities and Racial Equality Policies in the terms of employment and service delivery to ensure that colleagues are treated and services delivered in a fair and consistent manner.

39. To comply with health and safety policy and systems, report any incidents/accidents/hazards and take pro-active approach to health and safety matters in order to protect both yourself and others.

40. Any other duties of a similar nature related to the post which may be required from time to time.
