Course Description

Elementary German Language and Civilization II continues to introduce students to Germanic cultures through the major language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Open only to students with no experience in this language. The communicative approach methodology is enhanced by a virtual lab (SagMal Supersite and WebSAM) where students will:  practice their listening, writing and reading skills interactively  watch real life videos  complete homework multilayered activities with interactive guidelines  take all the tests

Course Objectives

 At the end of this course students will be able to  Understand and apply the grammar rules covered in the semester  Read and understand passages in German that will gradually become more challenging  Write short compositions in German in line with the acquisition of more vocabulary as the course progresses  Listen to native speakers and understand the gist of what is being said , starting from very basic exchanges to more complexes speeches  Communicate in German at a basic level, formulate their own presentations of different subjects presented in the textbook and answer elementary questions  Show knowledge of the cultural aspects of the German way of life, as presented in the textbook You will use Supersite-WEBSAM to:

 Take the online tests (due dates are on the calendar and grades  will be recorded on Blackboard) .  Do all the online homework (participation grade will be recorded on Blackboard. Students will be graded on completion of all the assigned activities and not performance.) You will use BLACKBOARD to:  Follow your weekly instruction  Check your grade book at any time  Communicate with your instructor and with your peers using the “email” function  Post the cultural quest results at the end of each week using the “discussion”  function  Post your compositions Make-ups: There are no make-ups for missed tests, quizzes or homework. All work, test and quizzes completed in advance will receive full credit. Any missed test, quiz or homework will result in a "0."

Semester Grade: 20% Homework on the Supersite 10% Cultural discussions 10% Song activities 10% 1 Oral presentation 10% 1 Composition 30% Chapter tests (3 x 10%) 10% Final exam TOTAL: 100% Guidelines and rubrics for each assignment will be posted on Blackboard.

Changes: This is a Blackboard enhanced course. Changes in the syllabus will be announced in class and posted on Blackboard. You are responsible for keeping up with any changes.

Students with five absences in this course will be withdrawn. Attendance in an online class is based on a student's completion of assignments, quizzes, discussion board postings, and tests. Missing assignments will be considered an absence in this course. You will be withdrawn from the course after missing more than four assignments in Blackboard (missing one or more assignments due on the same date will be considered one absence.) After a student has missed assignments with four separate due dates, the student will be notified that a further absence in the form of another missed assignment (with a different due date than the others) will result in their withdrawal from the course. Upon the fifth absence, the student will automatically be withdrawn from the course by the instructor.

Exceptions will be determined on a case-by-case basis for extremely extenuating circumstances, such as, but not limited to, complications regarding pregnancy, lengthy hospitalization as a result of a major medical condition, or military service. Exceptions will require clear and precise documentation which should be provided in a timely fashion.
