Conditions of assessment:  As per the Student Handbook.  All Assessment tasks must be handed in to Centre reception on the due date. Tutors will collect assessment tasks from reception after class on due date for marking.  Students must keep a copy of all work handed in.

Work marked as RESUBMIT must be handed in within 2 weeks of the student receiving it back.

All assessment tasks must be submitted to attain a satisfactory grade in this competency.

Assessment for this unit of competency will consist of an assignment covering performance criteria for the 3 elements, in conjunction with participation in group problem solving activities in class. The practical part of this assessment will be assessed on placement.

Questions require a demonstration of knowledge you have learned in class and reading. A couple of paragraphs is sufficient.

Part One A childcare Center has the following problems which could contribute to an unsafe work place for everyone:  Equipment with sharp worn edges is set up where children are playing.  Toys left out all day and stored inappropriately on shelves .e.g. heavy toys up high.  Nappy change area left in a mess between infants.  Chemicals used for cleaning are in unmarked spray dispensers.

Describe the best practice for controlling these risks, the duty of care responsibilities of the Staff and the employer when dealing with them and discuss the best work practices for making this center a safer work place.

Reporting an injury to a child in their care. 2. Dealing with a piece of equipment in the room which has just broken.

Part Three 1. List the most hygienic procedure for nappy changing to reduce the spread of germs. 2. How do you dispose of a syringe found in the sandpit? 3. Describe the correct procedure for lifting a child or equipment less than 10kgs to avoid straining your back. What other precautions could be taken to minimize injury. 4. Identify and briefly describe what could contribute to stress in a childcare setting.
