[4099] 2 1 Whereas, the Hammond Western team consists of only nine 2 members: tenth-graders Sara Stuart, Millie Chen, and Chelsea 3 Chen; ninth graders Seth Watkins, Claire Darnall, and Ellerslie 4 McCue; eighth-grader Laney Pound; and sixth-grader Claire 5 Pound and Piper Meeker; and 6 7 Whereas, in spite of the show standards that mix students from all 8 grade levels in competition, the Hammond middle school 9 equestrians took one championship, one reserve championship, 10 and five third places, even though the riders compete in only two 11 classes of the four represented in each show; and 12 13 Whereas, exchange students from China, twin sisters, Millie and 14 Chelsea Chen are the two newest riders on the high school team, 15 who both rode in China but found the horsemanship discipline and 16 the barn environment at Hammond noticeably different from their 17 experiences; and 18 19 Whereas, since organizing in 2008, the team has qualified for 20 Nationals each year, winning many individual and team titles at 21 the National level, including two Middle School National Reserve 22 Champions, and the team will return to Nationals in Oklahoma 23 City, Oklahoma, this summer where the high school will represent 24 Hammond as a team and four riders will show as individuals; and 25 26 Whereas, a native of Hopkins with experience riding and showing 27 horses on the local, state, and national levels, Joy McMillion has 28 served as the team’s head coach since its inception in 2008 and has 29 taken the team to nationals every year; and 30 31 Whereas, in a sport requiring precision, control, and athleticism, 32 Coach McMillion used her own equestrian ability and training to 33 hone a championship team and teach these riders lessons that will 34 be worthwhile throughout life both in and out of the arena; and 35 36 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 37 Representatives are grateful for the distinction and respect that the 38 Hammond School Western equestrian riders have brought to their 39 school and their community and expect to hear of their repeated 40 success in the future. Now, therefore, 41 42 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 43

[4099] 3 1 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 2 by this resolution, recognize and commend the Hammond School 3 Western equestrian team, coach, and school officials for a superb 4 season and congratulate them for garnering the 2013 South 5 Carolina Independent School Association State Championship 6 title. 7 8 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 9 Headmaster Christopher B.
