THE HUNGER GAMES

1. PROPAGANDA: The media and technology they have is used to promote the games and make it seem desirable and fun. When really the hunger games is used to fill the citizens with fear and a small scatter of hope to prevent another uprising. DENIAL OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND DENIAL OF HUMAN FREEDOMS: Citizens of Panem are limited to a certain district, not allowed in the woods and forced to watch the hunger games and the broadcasting involved with it. “Attendance is mandatory unless you are on death’s door. This evening officials will come around and check to see if this is the case. If not, you’ll be imprisoned.” (Pg 16) ERASING INDIVIDUALITY AND IDENTITY: As the tributes are picked, not all of them are allowed to express their individuality or keep their identity, many change for the pleasure of those viewing the games to enable them a better chance or winning the games. Many of the tributes identity and individuality change and disappear as they fight for survival. Peeta very clearly does not want to lose his individuality and identity from the game, “I don’t want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I’m not.” (Pg 140) STARVATION, CRUELTY, BRUTALITY: The capitol is full of endless amounts of food and luxury while those in the districts slave for the capitol and live in starvation and extreme poverty to do so. “Starvation’s not an uncommon fate in District 12. Who hasn’t seen the victims?” (Pg 28) HUMILIATION: Every year they have the hunger games and reaping it is almost to humiliate them and scare them so the uprising and rebellion will never happen again, and they make the society watch their own sons and daughters fight to the death in the games.

9. In Panem the society is divided into 12 districts with strict boundaries that the people must live and slave in. They are limited as to where they can go because they must stay in their strict boundaries of their district, as shown in the movie Katniss illegally challenges this by hunting in the out-of-bounds woods. In the book you learn that when these boundaries are crossed and you are caught, you could be found as an avox and servant to the capitol. In the book I would say that a bit of hyperbole is used to show the harshness of the capitol with the in depth description of the avox girl.

In Panem, society is forced to watch the reaping and the hunger games, forced to see their children and ones they love fight to the death. Situational irony is used to ridicule this issue. The hunger games is greatly advertised and shown through the capitols media and other sources. The government tries to make the hunger games seem appealing, fun and desirable, when in reality, young and innocent kids are fighting to the death and there is no or little benefit to it.

The society of Panem is also greatly limited economically. Their food, schooling and money is greatly limited which also limits them physically. Many districts are limited differently economically. District twelve is the mining district, leaving little opportunity and places to find food. District ll is the gathering, orchard district having them more limited for things like coal and electricity. These 12 districts are very limited economically while the main city; the capitol flourishes with richness, quality and freedom.

14. No matter the obstacles and trials people are faced with they can endure and push through them with the help and love of their dear ones and their everlasting hope.

Love and self-determination can concur even the hardest trials and hardships. Love and passion gives you something to live and strive for which creates hope and can help you endure and overcome anything

Society is run on fear of losing the ones that they love, and if you can control this and channel it you can, like Panem control and manipulate them.

16. I think that our society is affected by dehumanization and probably always will. I think there are certain societies with more poverty that will naturally have more dehumanization occur. I think that ordinary people are still faced with the invoking of fear and false tokens of hope. Through media and advertisements there are many who try to invoke fear and false hope within society and to create a certain sort of sick motivation to do something for their benefit. I think that there is also a great struggle to retain humanity and identity in our world when there is so much cause for evil. Society is faced with great hardships and harsh nature and when humans are pressed to their limits all humanity and sense of identity can disappear to ensure survival. Many people are focused on pure survival and living and when this is threatened they can easily lose their sense of what’s right and wrong and who they are. Media, technology, global conflict and economic competition can desensitize and distract us from what is important and can blind us from concern of others around us. We can be so wrapped up in the convenience and pleasure of media and technology that we can be withheld and distracted from things that matter and those that we love. Global conflict and economic competition can scare us and help us feel threatened and concerned about our wellbeing and ourselves but blinded to the help that others around us need. I think that people do become desensitized to reality and trues suffering of violence because we so regularly see and observe it through our media and technology. When we see it so often we become used to it and every time we are less shocked and scared of it. When this happens we start to accept it as a regular thing and often find a sick sort of joy in it. 17. (11) It is hard to show the film in the first person view of Katniss without narration through the whole film, however through camera work and the actions of Katniss you still can feel some of her emotions and reactions to things. Katniss is the main character and you feel as if she is showing her world, issues and problems to you., but you also feel this from many other characters making it feel more third person. The film is ultimately told in third person perspective and this detracts a sense of closeness and intimacy. You feel further away from the issue and because of this feel less sympathy or emotions for Katniss and the trials and obstacles she is going through. Because the film is not told from a first person view you lose that man vs self conflict. You are unable to enter Katniss thoughts and feel her emotions so it is harder to feel connected to her and understand her inner conflict. 18. (13) Katniss is able to win the hunger games with Peeta. She and Peeta survive and because they both win, she also in a way challenges the hunger games and the capitol. I think that love is responsible for this win. Katniss and Peeta could not have been able to win the games without being motivated and driven by the love they had for their families, friends and each other. Love instilled hope within them to keep them going and striving for victory. The cost of this victory is guilt and also safety. Katniss and Peeta both won which in a way challenged and threatened the Capitol. The Capitol is powerful and because of their actions they and their families are exposed and could easily be harmed.
