FLAG FOOTBALL NOTES

SKILLS:

1) Passing Grip: Hold near end of the ball with a couple of fingers on the laces. Motion: Regular throwing motion while stepping toward target.

2) Catching: High pass: Thumbs together. Low pass: Pinkies together. *Either way, you are attemting to catch the ball in your hands, rather than your body.

3) Running Patterns: Patterns are predetermined selected routes for recievers.

A. SLANT (IN): Reciever takes 3 steps before “slanting in” toward the quarterback.

B. OUT : Receiver takes 3 steps before “slanting out” away from the quarterback.

C. POST : Receiver runs straight 10 yards, fakes out and heads toward the goal post. (Jerry Rice, the best receiver ever, is famous for running this pattern, among others.)

D. FLAG : Receiver runs straight 10 yards, fakes in and heads toward the endzone corner (called the flag pattern because endzone corners used to be marked by flagS).

E. FLY (STREAK): Receiver runs straight down the field for a long pass. (Randy Moss, an athletic receiver for the Minnesota Vikings, has redefined this route.)

4. Pulling Flags: Reach with both hands, trying to slap the side of the runner, while stripping the flags off (as opposed to just stabbing the flags with one hand).
