Content/Skill Theme : Team Sports / Flag Football Date: September 7th & 27th Grade Level: 7th Grade Instructor: Jeanne Morgan Class Size: 36-40 Students Lesson Number: 1 Facility: Aux. Gym & Football Field Equipment: 30 footballs, 40 flag belts, 20 cones, music & microphone, white board & marker KNOW: SCORING: Touchdown – 6 points – When a player carries the ball across the goal line or a pass is completed in the end zone. Conversion - 1 point - After a touchdown is scored a team is given a scrimmage play from 3 yards away from the goal line to either complete a pass in the end zone or carry the ball over the goal line. Safety - 2 point - When the ball is legally in the possession of a player and it becomes dead behind their own goal line. Points are awarded to the opposing team and will receive the ball on the kickoff. TERMS: Off sides – When a player on the offensive or defensive team crosses the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped. Snapping- Handing or passing the ball back from its position on the ground with a quick continuous motion of the hands. Pass Interference- An act in which a player pushes, blocks, removes a flag, or holds an opponent to prevent him/her from catching or intercepting a pass after the ball has left the hands of the passer. Neutral Zone- A 3 yd. area separating the defensive team from the line of scrimmage. Line of Scrimmage- Offense: imaginary line drawn from the front tip of the ball and parallel to the end line. Defense: a line 3 yds. from and parallel to the offensive line of scrimmage. Lateral Pass- A pass that is thrown sideways or back toward the passers goal. Punt- The ball is held and dropped over the foot and kicked after a snap from the center. Kick Off- Kick where the ball is placed on the ground at the beginning of each half and after a score. Tackling- Pulling one of the ball carrier’s two flags. Huddle- Two or more players conferring between downs. Hand Off- Handing the ball forward behind the line of scrimmage to a backfield player. Fumble- Failure of a player to retain possession of the ball while running or while attempting to receive a kick, hand off, or lateral pass. A fumble is considered a dead ball. No player may kick, bat or dive for a fumbled ball. Incomplete Pass- A forward pass that cannot be caught, or is dropped before the receiver can maintain control. Interception- Catching a ball thrown by a member of the opposing team. The ball is “live” and may be advanced. Forward Pass- A pass that is thrown by any player behind the line of scrimmage toward the opponent’s goal. End zone- The area between the goal line and the end line. Down- Game unit, which begins with the centering of the ball and ends with a dead ball. Blocking- Blocking is illegal in flag football. Dead Ball - A situation where the ball is no longer in play. Defensive Team - The team not in possession of the ball. Offensive Team - The team in possession of the football Rushing - A team cannot rush the quarterback who is attempting to pass the ball for a 7 second count. Flags - Flags must be worn correctly and a player may not hold the belt while running. If the flag falls off or is pulled it is a dead ball. Three point stance - Starting position for all receivers.

Understand:

Student will be able to combine the critical elements of movement and skills concepts in flag football. Student will be able to demonstrate beginning strategies in flag football. Student will participate in flag football activities that require problem-solving, cooperation, skill assessment, and team building. Students will use the information taught in flag football and other resources to improve their performance. Students will develop strategies to communicate ideas and feelings during flag football. Student will work cooperatively and productively in a group while playing flag football. Students will demonstrate inclusiveness in and out of classroom settings. Students will recognize diverse skill performance in others and how that diversity affects game of flag football and sport participation. Students will implement safety procedures in the utilization of space and equipment. Students will demonstrate knowledge of safe practices while playing flag football.

Do: Student will identify and describe key elements in the mature performance in throwing a forward pass, lateral pass, hand-off, catching, punting, centering, running pass patterns, 3 step drop, rolling out and scrambling. Student will analyze movement patterns and correct errors. Student will compare and contrast the effectiveness of practicing flag football skills as a whole and practicing skills in smaller parts. Student will diagram and demonstrate basic offensive and defensive strategies for flag football. Student will use basic understanding of the knowledge of strategies in a flag football setting such as moving to open space to receive a pass or intercepting the football. Student will analyze and correct errors in movement patterns, and provide and use feedback from a peer. Student will seek out participation with, and show respect for a peer with varying skill ability in flag football. Student will evaluate individual responsibility in group efforts during flag football. Student will demonstrate the ability to resolve conflicts with peers during their flag football games. Student will identify and participate in safe warmup and cool-down activities for flag football. Student will review components of safe participation and what constitutes a safe environment while playing flag football. Student will follow the rules of flag football to maintain safe playing conditions. Students will play in a flag football tournament.
