GENERAL DESCRIPTION This is a 2-story, stone clad church building completed in 1950 from architectural designs by Cram & Ferguson, Architects, of Boston, Massachusetts. The church is situated on two building lots. The integrity of this building is fine, having only a few alterations from the time of its original construction. EXTERIOR Roughly speaking, the footprint of this church is "I"-shaped. The cross-member at the top of the I measures approximately 40' x 17'. It houses the sanctuary's chancel in the middle, the pastor's office & choir rooms on the south end, and the organ room on the north end. The vertical stroke of the I forms the sanctuary's nave. The bottom cross-member forms the building's educational wing and34'. possesses two stories. The footprint of the educational wing measures approximately 62' x The building is constructed of two kinds of load-bearing masonry~a structural wall of cement block with an inch of airspace between it and a facing wall of limestone. The limestone is of the Bedford type and was quarried at Bloomington, Indiana. As reported in Monticello at the time of the building's construction: Each of the stones is 4 inches wide, but they vary in size from 2-1/4 to 5 and 7-3/4 inches. Each is laid exactly level and never more than two of the same sizes are laid next to each other. In doing so, they make an interlocking device known as the regular broken asher [sic]. (Monticello Express 1949b) The limestone is rough cut with a natural finish. Its colors are brownish, reddish, and light and dark gray. The walls of the sanctuary are said to be 17 inches thick.

    PAHNKE'S "GOOD FRIDAY EXPERIMENT' A LONG-TERM FOLLOW-UP AND METHODOLOGICAL CRITIQUE Rick Doblin Cambridge, Massachusetts On Good Friday, 1962, before services commenced in Boston University's Marsh Chapel, Walter Pahnke administered small capsules to twenty Protestant divinity students. Thus began the most scientific experiment in the literature designed to investi­ gate the potential of psychedelic drugs to facilitate mystical experience (Pahnke, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1970; Pahnke & Richards, 1969a, 1969b, 1969c). Half the capsules contained psilocybin (30mg), an extract of psychoactive mushrooms, and the other half contained a placebo. According to Pahnke, the experiment determined that "the persons who received psilocybin experienced to a greater extent than did the controls the phenom­ ena described by our typology of mysticism" (Pahnke, 1963, p. 220). This paper is a brief methodological critique and long-term fol­ low-up study to the "Good Friday Experiment." Pahnke, who was a both a physician and a minister, conducted the experiment in brief 1962 for his Ph.D. in Religion and Society at Harvard University, methodological with Timothy Leary as his principal academic advisor (Leary, critique 1962, 1967, 1968). Describing the experiment, Walter Houston and Clark, 1961 recipient of the American Psychological Associ­ long-term ation's William James Memorial Award for contributions to the follow-up psychology of religion, writes, "There are no experiments known study to me in the history of the scientific study of religion better designed or clearer in their conclusions than this one" (Clark, 1969, p. 77). Since a classic means of evaluating mystical experiences is by their fruits, follow-up data is of fundamental importance in evalu­ ating the original experiment.

    Part II: The Crack-Up Timothy Leary came late to psychedelics. By the time he launched the Harvard Psilocybin Project in 1960, there had already been a full decade of psychedelic research in North America, with hundreds of academic papers and several international conferences to show for it. Leary himself seldom made reference to this body of work, preferring to give the impression that his own psychedelic research represented a radical new chapter in the annals of psychology. In 1960, the future of psychedelic research looked bright. Yet within the brief span of five years, the political and cultural weather completely shifted, a moral panic about LSD engulfed America, and virtually all psychedelic research and therapy were either halted or driven underground. What happened? “Timothy Leary” is the too-obvious answer to that question. Just about everyone I’ve interviewed on the subject—dozens of people—has prefaced his or her answer by saying, “It’s far too easy to blame Leary,” before proceeding to do precisely that. It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that the flamboyant psychology professor with a tropism bending him toward the sun of publicity, good or bad, did grave damage to the cause of psychedelic research. He did. And yet the social forces unleashed by the drugs themselves once they moved from the laboratory out into the culture were bigger and stronger than any individual could withstand—or take credit for. With or without the heedless, joyful, and amply publicized antics of Timothy Leary, the sheer Dionysian power of LSD was itself bound to shake things up and incite a reaction.

Thus began the most scientific experiment in the literature designed to investi­ gate the potential of psychedelic drugs to facilitate mystical experience (Pahnke, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1970; Pahnke & Richards, 1969a, 1969b, 1969c). Half the capsules contained psilocybin (30mg), an extract of psychoactive mushrooms, and the other half contained a placebo. According to Pahnke, the experiment determined that "the persons who received psilocybin experienced to a greater extent than did the controls the phenom­ ena described by our typology of mysticism" (Pahnke, 1963, p. 220). This paper is a brief methodological critique and long-term follow up study to the "Good Friday Experiment." Pahnke, who was a both a physician and a minister, conducted the experiment in brief 1962 for his Ph.D. in Religion and Society at Harvard University, methodological with Timothy Leary as his principal academic advisor (Leary, critique 1962, 1967, 1968). Describing the experiment, Walter Houston and Clark, 1961 recipient of the American Psychological Associ­ long-term ation's William James Memorial Award for contributions to the follow-up psychology of religion, writes, "There are no experiments known study to me in the history of the scientific study of religion better designed or clearer in their conclusions than this one" (Clark. 1969, p. 77). Since a classic means of evaluating mystical experiences is by their fruits, follow-up data is of'fundamental importance in evalu­ ating the original experiment.

HUGHES The history of the Civil Rights movement features contributions by specific colleges and universities. In this essay I consider the unique role of Boston University School of Theology in the movement. Established in 1839, Boston University School of Theology is the oldest Methodist seminary in the United States.1 On the basis of the Wesleyan tradition, the university admitted all members of society regardless of their race, gender, social class, or creed. In the 1950s, Boston University recruited African American students for graduate studies, when other universities refused to admit them, particularly when they came out of historically black colleges in the American south. Many of the southern black colleges were unaccred- ited due to a lack of funding and support. However, “Boston University’s great moral leadership provided nearly 100 percent of the Ph.D.s in religion awarded to black scholars in that period.”2 The university pioneered in what a later generation would call affirmative action, and the policy created the leadership for the Civil Rights movement. Hereafter, Boston University is designated as BU, and participants’ affiliations are indicated by school ini- tials and years of graduation. Beloved Community The most well-known BU graduate in the Civil Rights movement was Martin Luther King, Jr. (GRS’55, Hon’59). Although Baptist by upbringing and prior education, King’s life and thought were influenced by Methodist professors at BU and were consistent with Wesleyan theology. King en- rolled in the Ph.D.
